HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. - An advocate for Long Island's immigrant community decried a proposal Thursday that would require construction companies to prove their employees are legally eligible to work in the United States.

The proposal is the latest effort by the Suffolk County Legislature to address local concerns about the influx of undocumented workers _ many from Mexico and Central America _ in the past decade or so. County Executive Steve Levy, an advocate for a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigrants, estimates that of the county's 1.5 million population, 40,000 are illegal aliens.

I am still trying to figure out why illegals think they have a right to protest us enforcing our laws?

Round'em up.. kick'em back where they belong!

All those who come here, with a legal work visa or who have gone through the proper legal channels to become a U.S. citizen suffer.. it's not fair to them and it's not fair to the rest of America to have to foot the bill for these illegal criminals... mexico will not stop until they get rid.. of all thier own people who they see as nothing more than a burden on thier own country!

The ones I do feel bad for are those legal immigrants from Mexico/Central America who played it by the rules.

Thanks for nothing; you bloody illegals and your enablers!

This is great news! I spend a lot of time out there in the summers and every year that goes by, these guys get ballsier and ballsier. There used to be a lot of college students from all over the world working there for the summer. You would meet them working in the restaurants, shops, etc. They have been coming less and less because their illegal coworkers have been growing exponentially and treat them like crap because they are not from THEIR culture. I own a home there and pay property taxes, and they look down on me because I do not live there year round. I'm a "weekender". Sometimes I cant believe what I am seeing. Who are THEY to look down on ANYBODY?

I would gladly pay more to have an American do my landscaping, pool, etc.
With all the liberals out there I thought nothing would ever get done about it. I am glad that some people in the area have some sense.

When it comes to illegal immigration; more and more 'self described' Liberals are making a hard right turn, shall we say.

Anymore; it is the so-called Neo-Cons who seem to be pro illegal------read that unscrupulous business owners, etc.

I really think that BOTH libs and neocons benefit from illegals at the expense of the American public. If you watched the dem debate last night, both candidates are for amnesty.
