When the "Day without immigrants" protest was held, our local metropolitan planning agency, SANDAG authorized a $3 million study on how transportation needs changed. The day of the protest, freeways were wide open, and traffic counts dropped to 1980 levels. The air pollution index also experience major decline. One conclusion from the study was that if everyday was a "day without immigrants", $9 BILLION in transportation projects could be cancelled over the next 30 years.
In San Diego that day, the quality of life was so significantly improved that the protest organizers vowed to never do it again.
What we see daily is simply this: You CANNOT be in favor of a better enviroment AND in favor of open borders.
Few people outside of CA know how true this statement is. All the illegals did on that day is show everyone how much better the quality of life would be without them here. I'm still hoping they'll do another "Day without immigrants" which by the way is a lie. It was a day without "ILLEGAL" immigrants.
The guy who wrote that op-ed has an Indian name. He's probably only worried about Mexicans leaving because he, like many Indians, love cheap labor to pick up after them like what they had back home in India.
A lot of the Indians I work with have been here 10+ years and still don't understand that companies here do not employ "peons" to follow in their wake, picking up every mess they make. They are the biggest slobs in the office by FAR.
Look: 1) We have a system in place to fill jobs for which there is a demonstrable need. Including an UNLIMITED amount of agricultural temp vias for workers.
2) If "Mexicans" are going home, that's fine. There are waiting lists of LEGAL immigrants from countries like Mexico, Philippines, etc. who have been waiting to come here the RIGHT way whose immigration can be sped up to fill any real economic need.
3) American companies can start paying better wages to attract the out of work Americans out there if necessary. The African American unemployment rate is 12.6%. I'm willing to bet a majority of those unemployed African Americans aren't brain surgeons or college educated, and likely could very easily take on jobs abandoned by illegals "returning home."
American citizens first. Legal immigrants second. Illegal immigrants never.

This is everything the left wingers don't want to let out of the bag. They all know this is true, but they just hang on to their lies hoping desperately people will believe them and love illegals.

I Googled him. He's a professor at USC who studies immigration. He is NOT an economist. His CV is online but it's not even apparent if he's an American citizen. He very well could be a green card holder who just wants more immigration period, legal or not.

Whatever it is, he has an agenda.
