At the very bottom of the wage scale, illegal immigrants probably take a few jobs away from uneducated and marginalized American laborers. But the effect is minimal, according to researchers. The most comprehensive analysis has found that illegal immigration depresses wages no more than 50 cents to 60 cents an hour -- hardly a figure that makes or breaks a budget.
Those subtleties were drowned out by the Know-Nothing demagoguery that dominated the Republican presidential campaign. But with the GOP race largely settled -- and with Obama and Clinton conscientiously courting Latino voters -- the rhetoric will likely moderate.
That's because voters didn't fall for the scapegoating premise of Tancredoism. It was a bad product, and few voters bought it.
NEXT PRESIDENT WILL TONE DOWN ANTI-IMMIGRATION RHETORIC - Yahoo! News (broken link)
Very good article by Cynthia Tucker who is by the way a black woman.
even by her own admission they are taking the lower wage jobs, so when the economy is depressed or tanks (as it is in the process of doing) who will be stuck supporting these lower wage earners? obviously, the taxpayer. thanks for an even more enlightening article to an already troublesome problem!
there is government-issued stats that show illegal mexicans, which is at about 57% of the mexican population in the U.S... is costing American tax payers 300 million a year just in Ca. alone. It is totally appauling to me that these politicians will sink-so-low as to want/need illegal mexican votes. it is appauling that a person is not required to show proof, being a LEGAL U.S. citizen in order to cast a vote. Maybe I can bring in my dog and cat to vote as well...
Anti ILLEGAL immigration, not anti IMMIGRATION. At what point in life does ones education derail when they cannot tell the difference between what is LEGAL and what is ILLEGAL?
Next President Will Tone Down Anti-immigration Rhetoric? What the H has a title like that got to do with our concerns? We aren't anti-immigration. We are anti illegal alien. And by the by I could give a flying fig about this woman's take on it. Any one that walks upright on two legs should be able to comphrend the economic impact that illegals take on our country. Just ask the folks with hospitals shutting down on the border. More senseless dribble from another idiot.........
I am so puzzled by the black leadership supporting illegal immigration. Who does Cynthia think takes the jobs away from in the inner cities..the very people she represents. I would hope to see black teens working the McJobs, while going to school to gain an education, instead of living in misery dealing drugs. We could do so much more for our own citizens.
Pro-illegals, they just keep peeing and never flush.
So, in other words.. Pro-illegal only see's the toilet..
Anti-illegal, see's the toilet and knows it has to be flushed..
otherwise there will be a serious problem down the road.
As a veteran of many years in the public water field, your analogy is a bit "out there"...but OK, I'll go along. My worry is that we'll ALL end up with one big OUTHOUSE, and then the question of when, or whether, to "flush" will simply become a moot point....Life won't be more PLEASANT, but it will for sure be much simpler...

Sorry to disagree with you but, the States are going to rachet up the illegal immigration debate - the PEOPLE of this country are going to make the noise - regardless of who the President is.
