The "American people" didn't stop anything, talk radio and their followers just bullied spineless politicians into not voting for cloture. The politicians thought these callers had strong voting power BUT they will now realize talk radio and their followers are all bark and no bite.
Not only did WE THE PEOPLE STOPSHAMNESTY and the NIGHTMARE ACT TWICE, we shut down the Washington switchboards doing it.
Do you also know that most of the house reps and senators from Arizona support Comprehensive Immigration Reform?
Let's be clear - McCains original proposal, which was essentially amnesty, was SOUNDLY rejected by not only Arizonan's but, the rest of the country. Hence McCains clear statement that he realized he had made a mistake - that he "listened" -
McCain, and the Congressional delegation from Arizona (and other states) support of a comprehensive immigration reform does not include any form of amnesty - specifically, they support illegals returning to their country of origin and then apply to re-enter the US - on an expidited basis.
Hmmmm.............please explain why the illegal immigrants, most of whom happen to be Mestizo (Hispanic) are disappearing?

Basically: illegals are becoming persona non grata here.
There is a grade school, in the Mesa area, that HAD a substantial population of children of illegals - so many have left, they are now closing the school and the remaining students are being transferred to other locales.
Most american voters so far favor a comprehensive approach to immigration just like John McCain. He won easily in florida, california, arizona, oklahoma, missouri. Romney tried to take a hardline approach and failed miserably. So in the general elections, we will have both dem and McCain supporting Comprehensive Immigration Reform. I am extremely glad that the conservative talk show hosts and the followers have been exposed for being all talk but no voting power. They are seriously out of touch with the majority of the American Voters.
