I hear Trump and others say "We need to secure to border!!!" but have we stopped to consider if this is even possible given the set of rules we have. It is one thing if we were to militarize it but considering it will never happen, does anyone really think that we can secure 2000 miles of desert?

Just a thought.

I say build it, secure it with technology and regular patrols and if it stops even a small percentage of illegals, drugs and who knows what else it would be a good start.

The trouble is the world knows that illegals have it so easy here once they get in compared to so many other countries.
It is pretty rare for someone to sneak into Iran or North Korea or even into Mexico from the US. Even Canada is tough on those people who sneak in or over stay their visas. They arrest them and deport them. They certainly don't let them stay, give them handouts, give them rights short of voting and allow them to trample on the first amendment rights of citizens at Trump rallies while burning our flag and waving theirs.

If we made it more difficult for illegals to sneak in and stay comfortably then word will get out and they will stop coming.

There is nothing racist nothing anti American about wanting to lock the back door of your house against trespassers.

Physically it is entirely possible. No question about that.

The issue is political will. That's where all the mush resides.

Tyster ... Thank you for that valuable insight. Can you elaborate on how it is possible and costs?

I agree that something needs to be done but building a wall just seems like the dumbest idea. Once you cut off the free handouts, including healthcare and education, everyone would "self deport" or not bother coming.

7-10 Billion for the Wall,
much less for surveillance.
That's the Trump cost.
And Mexico will pay for it.

Otherwise, look forward to things like this:
Will CA Governor Jerry Brown sign the bill authorizing free health care to illegal aliens ?

Wall is unworkable. Borderline silly. You really think the Texans are going to give up their river front?

It is also likely impractical to seal the border against the smuggling of stuff. Make it more difficult but there are simply too many ways. And the coming of cargo carrying drones will make it even even easier for loads of a few to a 100 lbs.

It may make it worse on people smuggling though the rivers will not yield easily there and it will only get at parts of the problem. The visa over stayer is still the workable one and likely more important than the over land immigrant in the future.

Basically we need to reduce the illegal population to the number we can police and control. Certainly less than half a million at any one time. That will likely require legalization of most of those here to get to the sustainable numbers.

Benefits are of course a right wing pipe dream. Virtually all except emergency medical flow through legal children. Constitutional rights will prevent any significant crack down. And even if you could it would not work. I doubt we are willing to deprive anyone of live sustaining health care...which is likely the only prohibition we could make stick. And that would likely kill a multitude of poor citizens.

It costs us $113 billion a year in taxes for illegal aliens so the wall sounds like a bargain to me. Those costs would just accelerate with continued illegal immigration into our country. Mexico may not pay for it outright but there are ways to hurt them financially to make them at least help pay for it.

Criminals and terrorists aren't looking for benefits, healthcare and education. I agree with you otherwise, remove all of the incentives for the others to remain here and continue to come here and many if not most will self-deport.

Just a thought.

We just need the 700 mile wall built already approved by congress. It was to be built on the most porous areas of our southern border. It would help the Border Patrol immensely. It would deter illegal immigration a lot. No one expects it to stop illegal immigration altogether but it would put a huge dent in it.
