Rhetoric ran into reality last week in our local debate over illegal immigration, and reality won. It was reassuring, but it didn't make the big picture much clearer.
Times' staff writer Challen Stephens touched a nerve with his report on a 22-year-old illegal Guatemalan mother with leukemia. She received free chemotherapy at Huntsville Hospital under a hospital policy of caring for the poor, but that policy doesn't pay for long-term medication.

So, there it was. Would the community support letting Katarina possibly die rather than helping an illegal immigrant?
Opponents of illegal immigration don't like to focus on people. They say the issue is about obeying the law. They want the immigration stopped and the illegals already here gone.
This column is a target of those opponents because of a perception the columnist is too sympathetic to the illegals. That's fine.

Huh? This makes no sense whatsoever. Are animals beholden to law? Machines?

OF COURSE IT'S ABOUT PEOPLE. PEOPLE BREAK THE LAW. DUH!

I love these bleeding-heart arguments. Illegal gets sick, therefore illegal immigration is okie-dokie.

Get a new line. My heart bleeds Kool-Aid, and my head is ready to explode from these nonsense arguments.

The feebleminded reporter misses the point completely. There are hospitals in Mexico where this woman could have received chemotherapy. As a matter of fact, a specialist hospital devoted to cancer treatment opened outside Mexico City in 2006. She should have been returned to her home country and her government should have picked up the tab for her care.

Precisely!

Where are the stories of communities "coming together" to save the 1.3 million Americans diagnosed with cancer every year? Who is picking up the tab for the uninsured among them? Or are they just dying? Who really gives a rat's a** about sick Americans who can't afford chemotherapy in their own country? Mexico?

Right...

This reminds me of an American citizen who has a terminal illness, but makes exactly $1.00 over/month to qualify for medicaid. So, what is she doing? Working as long as she can. Like she says, she has no other option. I think wherever she works should let her drop few minutes so she could drop that $1.00. They were talking about how she doesn't qualify, but all the illegal has to do is walk into the hospital and everything is paid for, and the unfairness of it all. This terminally ill woman is still working and paying her taxes for these illegals to get free care. Sickening.

No illegal should get any healthcare in this country, especially when citizens are denied benefits. This makes me sick and it is wrong no matter how one looks at it.
