I've heard (from activists, anyway) that Hispanics reject the melting pot in favor of the "salad bowl," which is basically segregation by choice.

Furthermore, it takes several generations for cultures to assimilate. Since the population rise is expected to come almost exclusively from immigration - legal and illegal - this majority will not have had time to assimilate even if it desired to do so.

Is anyone claiming an impending "American" majority in Mexico? If not, then your analogy is false.

First point: when a 'Hispanic' is being depicted; do people mean any person of Spanish and/or Latin American heritage (most of whom are White) or just Mestizos from Mexico, etc?

Second point: the 'Hispanic' birthrate factoring in Americans of that background are having smaller and smaller families.

Third point: intermarriage will eliminate many aspects of so-called 'Hispanic' culture.

Final point: with the hardening anti illegal immigrant sentiment here in the USA; I have a very strong feeling that bilingualism, etc. will go by the wayside---------soon

I agree AB, but I'm asking what the activists themselves mean by "Hispanic majority?"

I've not heard an explanation as to the significance of this majority, hence my question, "Then What?" Legally speaking, civil rights have already been addressed in the US. I can't imagine what civil rights are currently denied to Hispanics that they plan on gaining.

Point taken.

It boils down to one word: money

Hell: I have asked several self described Hispanic people what a 'Hispanic' was---------most of them could not come up with a clear answer.

Mexico already is majority American, isn't it? We all live in North America.

Who cares what they think? The activists are ridiculous and do not represent the majority of Hispanics.

The true majority of Hispanics will or have assimilated to American culture, many of whom I know are in intermarriages with white, asian, black, indian...you name it. That is the way it will be, the way it is now, with maybe a little more salsa in it.

OK, here's an answer---if ten percent of the population of America (or even FIVE percent) moved to Mexico, determined that they wanted to live there, work there, and mingle with the local people---but did NOT want to assimilate into the Mexican culture, and was NOT concerned whether they had enterd Mexico legally or not, then of COURSE it would change Mexico..OBVIOUSLY, in many ways, some good, some bad.

This would never be allowed to happen, in real life. The Mexican government would take steps to stop it from ever getting to that point.

Yes, and if this is what they mean, they're in for a rude awakening.

Women have always been a majority, and that fact didn't earn them one cent.

Blacks are the majority in many local areas. These numbers haven't equated to wealth.

If Hispanics are looking for money, the number they should focus on is their high school dropout rate.

Though cronyism and outright theft are a possibility, an ethnic group cannot vote itself into prosperity.

Myself, I see these cries of "Majority!" to be nothing more than meaningless sabre rattling.

If and when Hispanics become the majority, will whites qualify for Affirmative Action?

From what I gather, "Hispanic" translates to "my people."
