WASHINGTON — The government says it will raise by 25 percent the fines it will levy against employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

Attorney General Michael Mukasey and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced the increase, which is the first boost in fines in nearly a decade.

I have a better idea, after the huge fine, the company that knowingly hires illegal alliens should take care of all the expenses caused by them, such as unpaid hospital bills, traffic tickets, deportation tickets, etc. Ouch, ouch get them out of the pouch, lol

Definitely, John . . . a step in the right direction.

However, fines are not enough. By hiring illegals, a company is basically stealing thousands, if not millions, from the taxpayers of this country and serious slammer time is the only way these lawbreakers will "get the message"!

How about this? $5 million fine PER illegal hired on the FIRST offense. Second offense 5 years in jail and business license REVOKED FOREVER.

Are illegals still cheaper?

Great idea! I believe the woman who murdered four children in Minnesota was working for Jenni-O..... then Jenni-O should pay the entire cost of the accident, everyone's expenses from hospitalization to even the flowers for the funerals, ALL lost wages(except hers), fire and rescue costs, new vehicles for those involved (except hers), all health care costs for anyone involved in the accident, counseling.....make them responsible for their ILLEGAL actions.

Edited to add: She was not an employee of Jenni-O, she was employed by a small cabinetry shop....nothing else to change.

Good idea. Also, perhaps some good-old fashioned jail time and perhaps the loss of personal savings and assets for the companies' executives would also be in order so that they know that the government means business.

A big YES to that. I like the idea of adding the illegal immigrant's medical expenses incurred to the employer's tab. That would do it in a heart beat.
