And it had nothing to do with crime.

It was a custody battle between one parent living in the U.S. and another living in Cuba.
Not even a living parent in the US. The mom drowned on the journey and Elian was rescued. The father did not even know she was escaping to America with the child, but his American relatives refused to relinquish him to his dad, and paraded him around for political purposes.

Yup. That kid was being used by his American relatives to "make a point."

IMHO the US government did exactly the right thing: returned the child to his loving father who never gave the mother permission to take the child out of Cuba.

Let's call it what it really was: kidnapping. Because that's what they'd call it if an American mother spirited her child out of the country and out of the reach of his loving father.

Now that Elian's an adult, he can decide for himself if he wants to get on a leaky boat to Florida.

There are an untold number of people jumping through all the hoops & waiting long periods of time trying to come here legally . Why should we permit illegals to jump the line , come here illegally & stay ?
