A proposal to turn Maryland into a “sanctuary state” by limiting local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities died in the State House on Monday after lawmakers withdrew the bill — which had garnered a veto threat from the governor and a rebuke from Trump administration Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Yeah, that wasn't as popular statewide as some of them thought.

Now, what will happen is it will be reintroduced next year and have the same thing happen. Wait, maybe not, it's state elections next year.

Anyway, it will keep being reintroduced until everyone is sick of it and will be passed just so it goes away.

Maybe. The House of Delegates passed it with a veto proof majority after the alleged rape (I say alleged because the narrative started to blame the girl about the third day) so it didn't have much effect there.

The Senate would have passed it too, but without a veto proof number.

The Governor is a Republican while the Legislature is heavily Democrat. The name of the game now, since elections are next year, is to pass legislation with great sounding names (this one was called the TRUST Act) to force a veto in order to embarrass the Governor.

It's the same playbook used against the last Republican Governor, Bob Ehrlich. He lost reelection to Martin O'Malley.

I can guarantee that if Anthony Brown had won in 2014 this legislation would have been passed and signed to great acclamation in a very public way.
