I live here; and Spanish speakers are diminishing in numbers.

Most Mexican Americans speak English----even amongst themselves

From having a spouse who actually WAS trying to kill me, perhaps? I STOPPED her from doing so, but I suppose you'd prefer I allowed her to beat me to death?

My own survival is more important than the survival of ANYONE else.

It's a start...

Same here. I speak English with friends and cousins. I speak English to my parents and get responses in Spanish. The only time I speak Spanish is with uncles and grandparents as a sign of respect.

As a sign of respect? Do they live in Mexico? Why should anyone respect people who dont respect the English language in America.

I'm not going to tell people who are older than me 'SPEAK ENGLISH!'. I've done so before, but to my parents, which is an entirely different story. Culturally speaking, one is expected to speak Spanish at home, and English outside. The Spanish language that is lost in Chicano individuals is looked down upon. Our parents make us practice our Spanish because thats the only time we get to practice it. Everyone else speaks English. As a result of speaking so much English, my Spanish skills have deteriorated heavily.

Boy you guys raise jingoism to increasing heights. How can you all possibly claim to respect English? Many of you write it terribly. If you cared for it your English would be impeccable. Some of you might even know what xenophobe means.

So day by day you "dis" the language by writing it badly...then you claim someone else is worse because they speak something else? At least they are not continuously insulting English.

They also show respect for elders and mother & father, like was common place here a long time ago. You can tell the difference from the older generations and the ones today when it comes to respect.

Both English, and Spanish need to be respected equally as our national languages
