Isn't that just mind blowing? No other demographic in this country, whether here legally or illegally, does this hold true for. They really have no need to learn English in places like L.A. Everything they need is written in spanish. Everyone they associate with can speak spanish. Even when they go to the DHS to collect benefits they are helped by people working there that were hired primarily for their capability to speak spanish fluently. In fact, to be hired these days by DHS, being bilingual in spanish is practically mandatory (unless they're hiring you to be bilingual in another language like mandarin or russian).

Just to put it into greater perspective, when was the last time you made a phone call to a business or government office where the option to do it in spanish was the first thing you heard? Now ask yourself when the last time was that the option for any other language was given. Exactly.....

The only job where speaking spanish should be a condition of employment (maybe) is that of a peace officer for the sole purpose of nailing criminals and getting them off the street in a timely and cost effective manner.

When I was still living in Southern California, I was looking for an office job. Each of the positions I looked at placed their ads in a local paper. This is what I saw:

((Now hiring Administrative Assistant in a Spanish Speaking Office. ))

A nice way of saying non spanish speakers need not apply

Kinda like NINA 100 years ago: "No Irish Need Apply" using things like "Protestant only" and so on.

If you ONLY speak Spanish then you shouldn't be allowed to work. I think that's what the other poster meant.

Yeah I notice this as being very common in L.A too .
The Spanish thing is even worse in places like Miami where many there refuse to speak English out of arrogance even if they know it .

I was working in south Miami area some years ago and after work one day I decided to go to a state run liquor store, when I went in I ask for a certain type of Canadian whiskey, the clerk looked at me with a funny look on her face....she had to call to the back of the store for someone who could speak English to come forward to serve me.

Ugh...it's outrageous. Miami is basically the rich section of Havana at this point.
