Section 314 makes crimes out of illegal entry and unlawful presence. If an offender does not have three misdemeanor convictions or a felony conviction, a first offense can result in imprisonment for up to six months. Subsequent offenses can result in imprisonment for up to two years.
If the alien has three misdemeanor convictions or a felony conviction, however, the term of imprisonment can be up to 20 years. This is not as harsh as some of the criminal provisions which are in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) already. Smuggling an alien into the country or helping one to remain here unlawfully (harboring) may “be punished by death or imprisoned for any term of years or for life” if it results in the death of any person.
Instead of getting tough on illegal aliens that is often seen as being mean and unnecessary by the Left I'd rather see a public service campaign that spells out just how much supporting illegal aliens costs America.
They need to highlight the costs, the negatives and explain that it is not only the drug dealers but the undocumented law breakers that are eroding our country.
They need to change public opinion and we will see the calls for Sanctuary cities whither away. Right now the Right is seen as a bunch of meanies that want to tear hard working families apart.
It's a good approach. Has lots of teeth, and I like it.
"The Davis-Oliver Act would make it possible for the states to take over the responsibility for immigration enforcement if a future president limits enforcement the way Obama did. "..... In particular, I like that feature. No matter who resides in The White House the border can still be controlled.
Obama has indeed changed America. In the long run he has made us stronger. The fact that he did it by attempting to emasculate law enforcement is an interesting lesson in history. It looks like Obama's policies will result in the abrupt halt of illegal immigration. And that is NOT what he had in mind.
In the end, Obama will have sold more guns to civilians than any other president, caused the death of more law enforcement officials, destroyed The Democratic Party, and enabled the expansion of nuclear arms around the world.
Socialism and Liberalism has been dealt a severe blow simply by allowing it to express itself.

It doesn't get "serious" until the bill makes it out of committee. Hopefully, this session's H.R. 2431 ("Davis-Oliver Act") gets a little further along in the process than last session's similar H.R. 1148 ("Davis Act").

Sooner or later: a law coming down HARD on illegal aliens WILL pass. Kinda like back on the day; it took law after law to start breaking Jim Crow but, 1 big ruling came down in 1965 and, that was the end of most of Jim Crow. Same thing will happen to illegal aliens and their fans.

You have a good point, but I don't think it will work. Whatever public campaign they do will be seen as racist, bigot, Nazis, etc. Trump could be Mother Teresa and they will still hate him. Everyone already knows illegal immigration costs this country. Supporters of illegal immigration benefit from that cost, so they will fight to keep illegal immigration going. Rational taxpayers don't need any convincing that illegal immigration is bad.
If you are worried about those propaganda shows like 60 Minutes swaying people, don't be. Many people are fed up with illegal immigration and welcome stronger enforcement efforts. Trump is not going to win any votes from the left by appeasing them. No matter what he does, they will not be pleased with him. He is enforcing immigration laws. That's part of any President's job. He doesn't need to justify doing his job.
