The head of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement unit in charge of deportations has directed his officers to take action against all undocumented immigrants they may cross paths with, regardless of criminal histories. The guidance appears to go beyond the Trump administration’s publicly stated aims, and some advocates say may explain a marked increase in immigration arrests.
But I disagree with the assessment by the reporter that this policy, which was announced in February, goes against the administration's publicly stated aims. The administration has stated that priorities for deportation include violent criminals/criminals that otherwise pose serious danger to public safety. But this in no way, shape or form means that ICE would turn a blind eye (or catch and release, to to speak) to illegals they come across in the course of their everyday activities, even if such individuals aren't priorities for deportation otherwise. That would be like asking a police officer to turn a blind eye to extortion the officer personally witnesses because the officer's department is prioritizing taking action to combat violent crimes.

Probably cause the reporter has to "spin" things to protect illegal aliens.
