The bills were part of a package of legislation introduced by majority Democrats to extend protections for immigrants without legal residency in the U.S., as the Trump administration has called for greater immigration enforcement.

Landlords who threaten immigrant tenants with deportation can now face civil claims in California - LA Times

I'm waiting for the Feds to swoop in and put Jerry Brown under arrest for breaking federal law.

"Threats of deportation"? That's how they exploit them, milk them for everything they can, and the reason they want to see them remain in the country.

"jacktravern" is right, but if they are controlling the illegal aliens by using threats, they won't actually want to make the call.

Here, housing that should be thrown down is easily filled with illegal aliens. If the city would get off their butts and enforce the city codes, there wouldn't be housing for them. They really run up the cost of rental properties here because they are willing to pay more since 2 to 3 families or more live in each dwelling and they can afford to pay more, especially when we pay to raise their anchors!

The Looney left at it's best...remember the illegal alien who sued SF for reporting him to ICE and won...where are the state lobbyists for the landlords?

LOL that's like threatening people who report crimes to the police with civil litigation for reporting the crime.
Besides how will the authorities know who dropped the dime? Call from a pay phone, a friend's phone or a Skype account.

Why are they insisting on passing rights of citizens and legal immigrants along to the illegal trespassers?

I have seen first hand how landlords can be swindled by illegals when I worked in property management.
It starts off fine when you rent a place to legal immigrants and then it starts when a "cousin" moves in for a week that turns into a month and longer and then the original tenant wants to move out but his cousin wants to stay and agrees to pay the rent but then the house gets turned into a flop house and you find out that the cousin was in the country illegally and you have no recourse to go after him for damages and he disappears into the shadows.

The day is coming when the illegal aliens will have more rights then the citizens and they will become a protected class much like how people with disabilities are now.

The rich, greedy landlords will be forced to take a back seat to their renters.

That is such a great comment. The Left is concerned for the illegals that if they come forward to report crimes that they will be deported so crimes against them will go unreported but they are threatening the landlord if he comes forward?? Sounds like a double standard to me.

Why should landlords be penalized for reporting a crime?
If drug deals are happening on the property the landlord can get in trouble. If the house burns down the landlord can get in trouble if the smoke alarms were not working, even if he was there the day before to check them and then the tenant removed them after he left.

The landlord has a responsibility to deal with and report criminal behavior to protect the public and other renters in the units.

If it were was not illegal aliens but a radical islamist terrorist cell that was renting the property would the state have any problem with the landlord reporting to the Police?

It seems that illegal aliens are on their way to becoming a protective class in Cali.

How long before California REQUIRES landlords to set aside a certain number of units for illegals? They're just crazy enough to do it.

As Real Estate professional who also handles property management, I would think renting to illegal aliens, knowingly, would be a crime!

We don't rent to illegal aliens as we ask for certain items the law allow us to ask for. We don't rent to people who can't show they are allowed into the country for the full time frame in a legal way as that would risk owners not to get paid.
