If it really turns into a problem, can’t we just take a few more legal immigrants? The quality and quantity of our choosing?

You know, the way it was designed to work.

I agree. If we truly have a shortage of blue-collared American workers we can increase the visas for legal immigrant workers. We don't need illegal aliens for anything.

I would refuse to do any of those jobs.

I work hard through school, and have work extremely hard for the job that I currently have.
Somebody needs to do those jobs, either the wages will increase until someone takes them or business's will automate them.

How many of you guys here, in this very forum, are willing to give up your current job to scrub toilets and clean other peoples' *****!
If you pay me enough, hand me the scrub brush.

So then, in fixing one problem, aren't we creating another?

Per the bolded --- I'm a college grad and would have no problem doing any of those jobs if I was down on my luck for whatever reason. Growing up, I was taught to never disparage any honest jobs. If I were in a situation where I went through my savings and the only work I could find was one of those jobs, I would take it rather than go on welfare.

We taught those same lessons to our daughter. While she was in college, she worked for a while as a certified nursing assistant at a nursing home. Also, she worked as a hotel maid.

In our younger days, my husband and I both did our share of minimum wage jobs.

I know that we aren't the only ones who think that it is better to take honest work rather than go on welfare.

We, as a nation, will do just fine if all the illegals left (like they should do).

If you travel deep into the Heartland to places that haven't been infested with illegals, you will find Americans doing all those jobs. Even in immigrant-heavy cities, you will find Americans cleaning hotel rooms and working BOH restaurant jobs.

I am the office manager for my husband's business.

I am also the janitress - and I clean my own house.

The yard work is getting a bit difficult, so I am thinking about hiring someone to do that. It will not be an illegal alien.

Well, I'll pick peaches here in the South for a couple of hours, two or three times a week, for only $50 an hour! They're looking for part-timers with no health benefits ...right? Call me!

That's why we have the unlimited H-2A visas for legal, foreign farm workers and they do have to provide health benefits for them.

It may surprise you how many legal Americans are out there who are still looking for jobs. I'm sure some of them wouldn't mind doing something like this, unpleasant and unglamourous as such tasks may be, until something better came along.
