If he paid a good wage, no one would be willing to purchase the tomatoes at a fair price (fair being something that compensates the farmer and distribution) and he would close down anyway. Why buy a US made microwave for $100 when you can go to WalMart and get one from China with more features for $40?!?

What affects me personally and pisses me off is that the best of Mexico's crops goes directly to the US market, and we have to select from what is left over!

Talking RE: tomato crop being discontinued!!!

Some people do not realize that the best quality crop goes to the purchaser of said crop. In this case large grocery chains buy the CREAM of the CROP so as to speak. When was the last time you went into a large super chain and found produce to be wilted, bruised,1/2 spoiled, dirty with soil still on them, outer skin marks from insects, had to be thrown away 2 days after purchase due to roting. There is GRADE A and GRADE B and left over is C for a general definition. The markets gets A, and smaller independents buy B and the flea mkt types get the left over C. Now when it comes to MEAT, which is another subject if I may please. You have CHOICE (premium),Standard,Commercial and the last COW. The last is used by many stores to make Hamburger. ALL BEEF is marked USDA to be used for HUMAN consumption. You will find some stores (meat mkts) with a more leaner cut of beef due to them buying from a smaller distributer who will have a supply of PRIME YOUNG CATTLE. Sorry for the extras but it is all related to the daily consumer. Stefhen

All the man has to do is sponsor someone to come here legally, that way he will pay taxes, and not use up our taxes, overburden schools, and take advantage of all of us.

It's not a matter of being cheap. It's a matter of commerical realities. Often local farmers cannot afford to pay any more for the simple reason that they can't sell the produce at a high enough price to make any profit - or even break even. Imported produce from Mexico and Central America can be bought by grocery store chains much cheaper than locally grown produce can. So, without cheap immigration labor, many farmers will simply go out of business and the US will find itself more and more dependent on Mexico and other countries for it's food supply.

And folks are concerned about dependence of foreign oil - what about dependence on foreign FOOD?

Better get used to that or start growing your own.

Ken
