Maybe there is a better, more cost effective way to handle the problem of people who are here "illegally". I think everyone can agree that not all illegals are murderers, rapists, and drug dealers, some simply are family people, like the rest of us, and they just want a better life for themselves and their families.

Based on that premise, and the fact that our present system does not work very well, perhaps this plan would solve the problem, give them a path to citizenship, and still kick out the bad apples:

Step one: Instead of attempting to deport all of them, set up a system to register all illegals in the country. Assure them that they are not going to be deported, we are simply going to accept that they are a fact of life, but we need to know who they are, and what their intentions are.

Step two: Give them temporary permission to be here, as long as they meet strict standards......ie, they must either have a job, be in school, or be a member of a family where the head of the household is employed.

Step three: Set limits on how long they can remain here without becoming a true citizen. Maybe something like a year, in which time they need to be taking classes to learn the language and to take their citizenship exam. If they do not complete it, or if they have not been working toward it, then they have violated that agreement, and they are history.

Step four: Make the path to citizenship easier and cheaper. Right now, it is a nightmare and expensive. Most illegals are living hand to mouth as it is, so if we make it so they can afford to do it, there will be a higher percentage who comply.

Step five: They need to keep their noses clean. If they break the law and are found to be guilty, they are gone. No second chances, no bleeding hearts, they are gone.

Step six: We set up quotas of how many NEW illegals we will accept. If we find people who have come in without our permission and who have not registered, ,then deport them immediately. I am just trying to address the existing illegals who are here right now.

My position is, we are never going to completely remove illegals from our country..........we could build wall after wall, put a guard every 3 feet at our borders, and they will still find a way to come in. This would turn illegals into legals and save us a ton of money and effort to control.

If you give that one person citizenship, then their children automatically obtain citizenship providing they are under 15. Their spouses can derive citizenship after number of years as well. There already is something similar to that called MAVNI

Although I advocate getting rid of all the illegals, I agree it isn't possible and your solution seems reasonable in theory.

A first step would be to actually identify how many illegals are in our country. We have been hearing the same 11 million for years. Any sane person knows this can't possibly be true. If the illegal population is more like 20, 30 or 40 million, I have reservations about letting that many stay.

The upcoming census should include information on citizenship status, which has been proposed. And contested by many on the left.

We can't fix a problem until we know exactly what we are dealing with.

Steps one through six; no amnesty. It just encourages more illegal immigrants.

Nope...We already have laws for people to become citizens...Close the boarder tight. Make the whole damn thing a free fire zone sooner or later they'll give up.....
