I've covered this over and over also. No you do not. Wal-Mart got nailed and it was their contractor using illegal labor. They had no idea.

Walmart did not get nailed their contractors did. Worked just like it was supposed to..

In a statement from Washington, federal officials announced that 12 janitorial contractors that worked for Wal-Mart had agreed to forfeit $4 million to the government and to plead guilty to criminal charges of employing illegal immigrants.

And Wal-mart's view

*****************************
Wal-Mart officials said the $11 million was not a fine, but a voluntary payment that would be used to help ensure compliance with immigration laws. Wal-Mart has said it has cut back its use of cleaning contractors.

Really doesn't matter what Wal-Mart said. It was an $11 million dollar fine. It should have been higher and can be higher. You can allow a business to call the fine whatever you want but when the local meat packing plant has to pay out millions it's going to have far more of an impact than making up stories to try and deport one woman.

Ah stop. It is not important what Wal-Mart said. What happened is no court decision was handed down against Wal-Mart or its executives. No conviction occurred. Instead Wal-Mart made a voluntary contribution and walked away. the payment was so small as to be lost in the round off at Wal-Mart.

And the reason the Feds agreed is they had no way of proving Wal-Mart was responsible...which is why Wal-Mart used Contractors.

The Tennessee meat packer was more interesting but that does not appear to have really been an illegal immigrant raid. It looks more like the IRS chasing a tax cheater.

No, they agreed to pay the fine as opposed to go through a trial.

I do not care what they nail them for. Neither will the employer of illegals.

No. No fine. Simple a negotiated settlement they were never charged nor indicted nor was any court action begun. The Feds had no real case.

Most of the Tennessee illegals were released. And likely more will be.

They probably will be released. Business believes it needs the cheap labor.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), the world's largest retailer, escaped criminal charges when it agreed to pay $11 million, a record fine in a civil immigration case, to end a federal probe into its use of illegal immigrants as janitors.

Walmart asserts it was not a fine and the NYTimes appears to agree. But Fox is now your adjudicator of things legal? I would not go there.

Nearly all that "settle" claim they did nothing wrong. I don't care what they want to claim.

You are on a win streak. Wal-Mart clearly agreed they did wrong and would correct the problem. Interestingly enough I do not believe them...but hope it is true. But you obviously see it with the clarity of the true believer.
