Releasing dangerous criminals back on the streets instead of cooperating with ICE is not helpful. Going after employers is good, but it's not enough. There are multiple fronts in this battle. To solve illegal immigration.
Not enough? It isn't happening. Where is the condemnation? Politics.
I think Sanctuary Cities create more problems in the long run. Deportations are somewhat effective but in many instances the deportees are desperate and do return, eventually.

Sanctuary policies inhibit the ability of law enforcement officers to accurately identify foreign nationals which makes it more difficult to uncover their illegal activities. Illegal aliens face less risk of deportation too if caught by local law enforcement. Sanctuary policies also help shield the operations of Latin American drug cartels, gangs, and terrorist cells--since their activities are less likely to be detected and real identities uncovered by local, state, or federal law enforcement.

From 2009 to 2016, his administration oversaw the forcible removal of more than 3 million undocumented immigrants—most of whom were sent back to Mexico. Neither Bill Clinton, nor George W. Bush, Obama’s two predecessors, came close in reaching his tally over their two terms.

As long as the reason people come here remain, deportions are a waste of time, energy and money.
So you want the US to be less great? People will still want to come here, even if you make it harder to employ illegals. Of course we should be deporting illegals.

I certainly don't have all the answers, but let me revise my last post.
Make e-verify the absolute standard (or whatever is the best way to screen illegals).
Vigorously prosecute any and all employers who hire illegals.
Build wall and increase border security.
Feverishly deport ALL illegals.
