All this talk about the wall funding is really getting on my nerves. Simply because the wall is totally, absolutely unnecessary. If Trump and the Republicans were actually serious about illegal immigration, they could end it tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow. How? Make E-Verify mandatory for every single job hire, coupled with sky-high fines for violators. Overnight, millions of illegals would be thrown out of work. They'd have no choice but to go home of their own accord. And nobody in their right mind would bother coming over illegally, since there would be no jobs to be had, unless you were a citizen or had a valid work permit.

So, why won't they do this? It's a system which has proven to be highly effective and would require no time at all to implement. Maybe the whole wall thing is just smoke and mirrors to score votes in the next election? Sigh.

It takes more than trump and the republicans to pass bills in congress.
Many legislators don't vote for these things because it is against their or their constituents bottom line. Companies exploit illegals for cheap labor which increase profit.

If somehow mandatory e-verify and heavy fines and jail time for violators were ever enacted what would it take to have it rescinded or just not followed, like previous immigration laws? Walls would be harder to tear down and ignore.

Dude, you have no clue how many of these illegal aliens work in the "cash" economy in our country. These illegals don't fill out applications or get pay checks. I see it everyday. Go outside and get a real world education. Then come back and tout your useless wall theory.

Aren't most illegals paid cash under the table?? How would e-verify help resolve this??

I don’t think most are paid under the table. You can work with an ITIN or fake SS number easily. Businesses know about this but don’t care. They also are worried about liabilities if one of the illegals gets hurt. I believe if that happens, they are protected from deportation.

Trump has e-verify in his 2019 budget. It has to go through congress. The last time the GOP presented an e-verify bill it was the Democrats that voted it down.

E-verify will help but it's not the total solution because not all illegals are coming here to work and many of them get paid in cash. A good physical barrier has to be a part of the solution also to deter illegal entry into our country. Some illegals would still come here for birthright citizenship for their kids to and the benefits that would get them. Fixing that has to a part of the solution also.

No, a good wall is not being persued for votes but being against is certainly a way for the Democrats to gain votes from their base.

No solution is 100%. e-verify would get rid of a huge swath of the illegals. To supplement it I'd say we prosecute anyone who gets caught paying illegals under the table. No matter to me if its a suburban soccer Mom trying to get her house cleaned on the cheap. A few of them doing the perp walk on the nightly news and folks would get the message.

My State doesn't have much in the way of illegals and somehow houses get cleaned, lawns get mowed, dishes get cleaned at restaurants etc. All you have to do is pay a living wage to an American and it gets done.

Because it's mostly ineffective at detecting those unauthorized to work in the US.

Quote:
"As seen in Exhibit 2, approximately 3.3 percent of all E-Verify findings are for unauthorized workers incorrectly found employment authorized and 2.9 percent of all findings are for unauthorized workers correctly not found employment authorized. Thus, almost half of all unauthorized workers are correctly not found to be employment authorized (2.9/6.2) and just over half are found to be employment authorized (3.3/6.2). Consequently, the inaccuracy rate for unauthorized workers is estimated to be approximately 54 percent with a plausible range of 37 percent to 64 percent. This finding is not surprising, given that since the inception of E-Verify it has been clear that many unauthorized workers obtain employment by committing identity fraud that cannot be detected by E-Verify"
The important takeaway...

Given that, my proposal is to close the southern border off to everything and everyone but verified international trade transportation or those with verified work visas. Require all foreigners to enter via airports or seaports, where they must submit a passport from their home country for entry into the US. The benefit of doing so is that we now have a documented identity for each alien, instead of them presenting at the southern border claiming they have no ID or documentation and saying whatever the hell they want as to who and how old they are. Track every alien admitted at an airport/seaport. If they overstay their visa, etc., deport them.

They could also stop illegal immigration just by prosecuting employers who hire illegals.
