Would you be in favor of having more english literacy classes for immigrants out of tax our tax money?

Sorry, money got cut off from the poll. And I totally butchered the title.

It should read

'Would you be in favor of having more english literacy classes for immigrants out of our tax money?'

Yes, for legal immigrants. Or, it could be done by the companies who hire them. We used to teach ESL at the large hospital where I work, but now, they send them to other classes in the city, where they have to pay.

Absolutely not!! Since when is it the taxpayer's responsibility to finance the education of foreigners who made the CHOICE to move here??

How else are you going to fight for English only if they're pretty much laid out to dry in this aspect?

English lessons for legal immigrants would be an investment in our future, and money well spent. I have a feeling, though, that the "activists" are going to want to include illegals, too. In THAT case, I'd have to say no. Illegal immigration hurts everyone, mostly legal immigrants. To reward it would be to condone it....bad message.

People who come here legally should be encouraged to learn the language. If they're willing to learn, I'm willing to help. It makes FAR more sense than many other things we spend "MY" money on..

People who immigrate here legally are ALREADY REQUIRED to be rudimentarily fluent in English. That's the law, it's just ANOTHER one that gets IGNORED!

I think we need to help legal immigrants learn english. Try learning another language on your own without training, its not going to happen. I agree, it should be for legal immigrants, but it should only be for LEGAL immigrants. It would be taxpayer money well spent.

No way. For "immigrants" to expect taxpayers to pay for their classes is the height of arrogance. Imagine American tourists demanding citizens of foreign countries to provide free classes.

It is the responsibility of the one about to relocate to another country to properly prepare himself and his family for the move.

Try learning another language by signing up for a class -- out of your own money!

We absolutely do not need a bunch of freeloaders moving here. If they don't want it badly enough to sign up for classes that they themselves pay for, then let them stay home where they belong.

There are plenty of people who want to come here, and plenty will make the effort themselves to be prepared. We need to be more selective in our immigrants.
