This bill focuses specifically on criminal illegal aliens. There's nobody that should be in opposition to this piece of legislation," Ball said. He added that "30 percent of the prison populations are criminal illegal aliens in our state prisons."
The Department of Correctional Services said the figure is actually 4 percent.
At the end of 2007, there were 2,375 illegal aliens among New York's 62,599 prisoners. The entire foreign-born population in the system - including permanent residents, undocumented aliens and citizens - was 6,527 prisoners, about 10 percent of the total.

Ball immigration bill opposed by state correction officials | lohud.com | The Journal News
It is really sad when elected officials don't know the real statistics, but spew the false numbers put out there by the anti-immigrant crowd. The 30 percent figure Ball mentioned has been posted and passed around in those false chain emails. So no wonder they can't solve the problem because they are getting their information from the wrong source.
