Default Study: Illegal worker crackdown would cost employers $1B

Quote:
WASHINGTON - The government's plan to crack down on illegal workers could cost employers more than $1 billion a year and legal workers billions in lost wages, a study commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says.

They should just give legal status to those working illegally and secure the borders.

No, I prefer Mexico's law. Deport all illegals. Ask questions later.

naw - Let them in so we can have a underclass that will work for low wages and be too frightened to report any crimes to the police for fear of getting deported. This has worked well for the last 20 years for both the "legit" busineses and the gangs. Keeps wages down and profits up. What's not to love?

This country functioned quite well with few illegal immigrants-------and, has anybody noticed during that era (1950-73) that real wages rose for blue collar Americans?

Besides: with the present recession, this would be the time to 'clean house'

It's about time the greedy class pays something.

Anyone who cannot make a business run by hiring Americans should relocate their business out of this country.

It's simple. If you can only hire Mexicans, then move to Mexico yourself and build your business there.

I agree, but unfortunately? this is exactly what has been happening (and not just with Mexico - outsourcing to Pakistan and other countries achieves the same objectives). Where will it stop and what will be left for US workers? Can we all be bankers and lawyers? Maybe doctors -- maybe the US could become the world's healthcare system, we're good at that

Yeah? And public services for illegal aliens cost California taxpayers 10.5 BILLION dollars a year, more than ten times the cost to the employers of illegal aliens.

What's your point?

If someone is employing an illegal alien, then they deserve to suffer the consequences of their own illegal actions.

My heart doesn't exactly bleed for those who benefit off of illegal immigrants thus depriving the American blue collar worker of steady employment.

Well if you conservatives believe in Reaganomics..then when you pull 1Billiion away from businesses and rich people, that "trickles down" to less jobs for Middle and Lower class Americans eventually.

Yes the rich are greedy, but they also create jobs for all of us, I can't remember the last time I was hired by a poor person.

This is true. Unfortunately, these greedy unscrupulous employers are essentially eliminating the middle-class. If they have their druthers, none of us will be earning livable wages. They are only concerned with profit; and they don’t care HOW it’s generated. Their greed is like a festering wound -- it will only worsen.
