They found 52 percent of new green card holders in California had lived in the country illegally before.
When they looked at the country as a whole, researchers found a smaller but still significant percentage of permanent residents – 42 percent – have lived in the country illegally.
Poll: Most new legal immigrants were illegal at some point - Los Angeles Times (broken link)
How interesting.

A google search of "52 percent of new green card holders in California" returned:

"It highlights how overly simplified our understanding of immigrants and immigration can be," said Hill, who said a stark distinction between "illegal" and "legal" immigrants does not acknowledge the frequent correlation between both categories. I think the startling # here is the 42% outside of CA were illegal..THAT MEANS IT IS NOT JUST MEXICANS!

They are talking about NEW immigrants.

The study was released today by the Public Policy Institute of California. It goes against the conventional notion that most legal immigrants wait for permanent residency papers before coming to the United States

"Most new legals were once illegal"?...OK. Whether it's really "most", or "some", it's undoubtedly true....so now what? Bring in MORE illegals, because they are the "source" for our legal population? I can't figure out whether this is making a "pro"-illegal point or an "anti"...

MOST prison inmates started out in life as law-abiding citizens.....MOST adults were once runny-nosed little kids with dirty diapers.....MOST college graduates, at one time, had only a 6th-grade education....so WHAT? It's a bit of 'trivia', but absolutely meaningless, unless you're trying to promote illegals coming here, because "that's how we get our new citizens". It's NOT....the LEGAL way is still open, and that's the way we should be recommending that new people come in.

A few VERY nice, upstanding citizens, at one time in their lives, spent time in jail....a FEW. Still, we don't look for society's leaders among the ranks of ex-convicts, do we? Even though SOME of them turned out "OK"?. What's the POINT of this thread?

The point of the thread is: what is the process? Does anyone really know?
The whole idea that illegals should go back and wait in line seems completely invalidated by this poll.
