Catherine Zeta Jones is a perfect example of this....Looks Latina down to the curves
But we all know she is Welsh...
OTOH: I used to know a woman from Spain; born and raised-------who could not pass for 'Latina' if her life depended on it; she was slim with natural blonde hair and blue eyes. Needless to say, she spoke Spanish fluently.
If millions of poor white uneducated immigrants were flooding into Mexico and doing the same I believe the feelings would be mutual among many Mexicans.
as this economy gets worst, this scenario may actually play out :S
I think we all have a little prejudice on us, some more than others. Regardless, it is human nature to dislike something that may be different from you, sometimes not because of his or her skin color, but because of how that particular set of people chooses to behave. One of my sons has always called me an equal opportunity hater. I dislike ghetto fabulous people who are loud and obnoxious and are unachievers......and by the way ghetto fabulous comes in all colors.
As a black individual who is mixed (Jamaican and Scottish), I can honestly say that I respect both sides of my family. Nevertheless, as a mother who has pride in where she lives as well as wanting to teach her children that one should not be judged by his or her color or country of origin, I refuse to live in predominantly white, black, hispanic, Asian or any other race neighborhood. Anywhere I live has to be mixed, I find life less complicated and more accepting that way. If I lived in an all white neighborhood I will be faced with stares and prejudice, if I lived in an all black neighborhood I will also be faced with the same dilemma.

Well stated; and I can understand your feeling about being around 'like minded' people.
The irony is within the Hispanic community is they too tend divide up along racial lines as well------but, do not like to admit to it.
In all fairness; being hassled by other Blacks in your case I do find odd. Many of the 'Black' leaders of the Civil Rights movement of two generations ago were Mulatto-----not stereotypically Sub Saharan African in appearance. Rosa Parks comes to mind along WEB Dubois and even MLK.
Don't feel like a racist just try to stay as cool as possible. I'm mexican-american, my parents are both from mexico and I have come across very wonderful people from mexico who are trying hard to fit into this society, but I have also met very ignorant people too. Just remember that every race has it's beautiful people and there is the not so polite side, full of hatred.

Yeah people of Latin America are quite racist. You can see it on their soap operas, the lighter skin characters are always the "good" ones. Also there is quite a bit of machismo.
I had a black co-worker that used to say that blacks lived a schizophrenic existence. They had to act "white" at work and "black" around their peers. So a racially black person will be rejected if the don't act "black" enough. I used to see it in college a lot. Whenever a few black students got together I couldn't understand a word they said. But when I spoke to them one-on-one I had no problems.
In the Asian community I've heard the "white wash" term.

LOTS of people are forced to live a "schizophrenic existence" (ever hear of 'an officer and a gentleman'.?)
I heard it said by SOMEONE once, half in jest, that the "typical" American woman is looking for a mate who "Is cultured, kind, caring, and sensitive...who can discuss his feelings, but spends MORE time discussing hers...who isn't afraid to cry, and appreciates classical music, and is willing to shop patiently for hours. Who can take her out to dinner at an elegant restaurant, who will hold the door and 'pull out her chair'....who can order from a French menu, and can choose a wine...AND, when some drunken lout comes staggering up to their table and propositions her, this 'ideal mate' will grab the intruder by the elbow, escort him out to the parking lot, and KICK HIS A$$ DOWN THE STREET".....
It's just as possible to be racist against Americans.
It's like the slurs "gringo" and "anglo", looking at someone and referring to them as an anglo or gringo. If Americans travel to Mexico, someone there might comment or ask about them being a gringo. So what?
Asking if some child is a Mexican, or a German, or a black American is not really racist. Or it might be racist but for some reason, people like to categorize by race. It's just as common for Mexicans to do this to Americans.
Gringo is usually meant as a foreigner. Thats why you don't really see Chicano's using it (unless they are trying to use it in that context.
I dont care how dictionaries say it, it's usually meant in the way people say, "psh. tourists.".
And if they ask someone if they are a gringo to their face, they probably mean it playfully. The way we like to call each other gordito, flaco, feito, etc etc.
We like to tease each other a lot. In American, you can't get away with calling someone "little fatty", "little ugly one" without someone crying and getting all offended. Different cultures.
And Anglo just refers to a large number of people in America who are Anglo-Saxon. And admit it, I bet outside immigrant rallies, you rarely if ever hear a white person referred to as Anglo casually. It's more like an umbrella term used to describe white Americans. Not a slur. Its an ethnic term.
examples of slurs: *******, greaser, ****, mexi-sh**, etc
THat like saying calling someone a Mex or a Hispanic is a slur.
