Child abandonment is always sad, and tugs at the heartstrings. However, it is reprehensible to exploit this child by attempting to designate him as a “poster child” for the immigration debate.

What the immigration debate has lacked thus far is a "poster child" that brings home the issue and exposes how it impacts the most vulnerable.

Well, the wait is finally over.

This article is nonsense. The mother's note said the family had been in the US for a year after leaving Guatemala. The child is two so he obviously was not born in the US. The Guatemalan embassy needs to be contacted and made aware that a two year old citizen of their country has been abandoned in the US. They can then take custody of the child and hopefully find relatives back home who can care for him. I am confident there are orphanages or foster care homes where this little boy can be cared for until his extended family is found. If a two year old American child was found abandoned in Guatemala, I am sure Guatemalan officials would do the same.

Not sure about the 'gun point' thing; but, yes, Elian was deported back to Cuba about 10 years ago---------and, doing well these days (thank God).

Yeah he is doing real good AZ...
Elián González joins Communist youth - International Herald Tribune

The Communist youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde quoted the boy, Elián González, as saying he would never let down former President Fidel Castro and his brother Raúl Castro, who succeeded the leader this year.
Good job, we just guaranteed a communist future in Cuba and one kid who probably hates America.

Frankly (with all due respect to Elian); who gives a damn about Cuba anymore? I certainly don't.

That nation is hanging on by a thread and; anymore, the US embargo should be lifted IMHO---------Fidel is an old sick man and Raul ain't much younger.

What I don't understand is they were somehow getting food and shelter for a year. The real problem is that low life husband of hers. He was working even though he was illegal, but he left them and he is the reason they didn't have anything. How many other illegals are working in this country? That is a lame excuse that she couldn't find work, she could easily get food and shelter from churches, they help everyone and anyone.
BTW - we didn't "guarantee" a communist future in Cuba (we don't have any control over what goes on there), they have been and always will be as long as those two idiots are running the place.

You really have to wonder about a culture and it's people who continue to breed so irresponsibly. Why does a woman decide to bring children into the world when she has no way to provide for them -- does she really believe she should have a free ride simply for giving birth?

This is exactly what's wrong in their own counties. Too many people with no jobs, no education, no skills of any kind having baby after baby and figuring all they have to do is get to the USA and on welfare and all will be fine.

Illegals willing to work for less than minimum wage are not going to be able to support their large families with our very high cost of living. They expect to be given welfare handouts.

There is no way we can provide the welfare programs the entire world wants/needs. We possibly could take care of American citizens -- but we're not really doing much for them.

All that will happen is more Cubans will flee Cuban and expect to be given refugee status and handouts here.

We helped Castro stay in power way past the time he should have been by allowing all his political opponents to come to the USA. Instead of working for freedom in Cuba, they were given a whole city, a whole state of the USA to make their own. They'll never give up the American money to go home and improve that place.
