WASHINGTON - The Bush administration has sharply ratcheted up prosecutions of illegal immigrants along the U.S.-Mexico border in the past year, with increases so dramatic that immigration offenses now account for as much as half of the nation's federal criminal caseload.

In the widening crackdown, administration officials prosecuted 9,350 illegal immigrants on federal criminal charges in March, a 73 percent increase over prosecutions last year and an all-time high, according to statistics released Tuesday. Convicted people have received jail sentences averaging about one month.

"The reason this works is because these illegal migrants come to realize that violating the law will not simply send them back to try over again, but will require them to actually serve some short period of time in a jail or prison setting, and will brand them as having been violators of the law," Chertoff said. "That has a very significant deterrent impact."
This is long overdue. Excellent!

I'd be hopping up and down for this news, if this wasn't being done during an election year which raises suspicion for the GOP trying to save their butts.

Yah think? El presidente jorge, an open border globalist, has stepped up his dog and pony shows but there are still up to 10,000 illegal aliens breaking in a day, each and every day, day after day. He can afford to prosecute a couple of hundred illegals a day, can't he?

How many employers of illegal immigrants have been prosecuted and convicted?

Irrelevant.

The threat of the above is having its intended effect---------illegals; most of whom happen to be Mestizo (Hispanic) are definitely thinning out here in Arizona.

How is that irrelevant? As long as there are employers giving them jobs, they will come.

I agree its easier to nail the Employers and take away the Incentive.
Create a foolproof system to determine if someone is illegal nor not.
Slap HUGE fines on Employers who hire Illegals.
You will see a massive outflow of Illegals!
