Interesting how the example used was Puerto Rican as in latin, hispanic spanish speaking what ever you want to term it. If the target is illegal, and the numbers equate to Mexican or Latin American I can't help but wonder if an officer sees a latin/hispanic and a white driver passing at the same time and both run a stop sign that the target will be the latin/hispanic. Sorry but I am just a cynic.

That is a double standard.

I used to hassled by the 'man' 30+ years ago for long hair, tiedyed shirts and so forth; I did not like it, but, hindsight being 20/20, all too often people of my appearance were indeed up to no good. BTW: I was 'clean'

Oh well.
So true how unfortunate for you. Looks are everything but often mean nothing.

Bottom line: If they are indeed hard-working and law-abiding, they would not come to the attention of law enforcement in the 287(g) program. I have lived 40+ years, and have yet to see the inside of a patrol car or police station, with the exception of participating in a “ride-a-long” program for a criminal justice course in college.

The police are not scouring the streets in search of “people with an accent.” That would be “profiling” albeit, not “racial” profiling, given the fact that illegal aliens come in all colors and languages. Those detained and deported through this program were identified as being illegal through “their” violation of laws, which resulted in their arrest. They have no one to blame but themselves.
See GiyPinestra's reply to me... It is in the article.

If the officers have reason to believe the person isn't telling the truth, they can do more checking, Hughes said. One sign that a person might not have been born in the United States is that the person has difficulty speaking English, he said.

Looks can be probable cause.

Read that it was/is my choice; not society's, to dress in the manner that I did/do.

Which is why profiling or prejudging of any kind is simply wrong. At least you were profiled for your looks which is something you could have changed if you chose to do so or not. One cannot change his/her race.

Profiling of any kind is wrong? Surely, you cannot mean that statement.

The "287(g) program," in which federally trained deputies check out the immigration status of people who are arrested and taken to jails in Alamance and other North Carolina counties, is gaining popularity statewide as a way to control the population of illegal aliens.

I love this program. I haven't heard whether or not all states will adopt it, but I hope Utah does!

They have been trained they know what to do. And sometimes we do have to profile/judge - we all do, I know I do, almost daily.

Someone has just vandalized a black man’s home and spray painted "Ni@@ers DIE" on their walls. You see several people walking in different directions near the crime scene. A 73 year old white grandmother with a grocery bag, A 25 year old classic skinhead white trash biker sort with White Pride prison tattoos, a 52 year old African American in a business suit with a briefcase, and a 12 year old Hispanic Girl with a Pokemon backpack.

You can only stop one of them to question. Who should the police choose and why?
