The reason for hispandering and being lectured on having to learn Spanish is because we have been occupied by tens of millions of Spanish speaking, foreign invaders and their hundreds of support groups. We have never had to cater to one segment of the population like this before. We are losing our sovereignty due to illegal immigration. It appears B.O. prefers mob rule over rule-of-law.

How many billions of dollars in signage, forms, interpreters, etc., will it cost yearly to incorporate two launguages? The amount will be staggering, it already is.

B.O. speaks of unity but by declaring that we must teach our children Spanish he is creating a division in America never before seen, partially evidenced by the length and amount disagreement in this very thread.

Obama's handlers need to give him a "pocket prompter" as every time he's left to his own devices he insults American citizens.

The English language is the single most unifying factor we have in America.

The only part of Obama's statement I would take issue with is with advocating Spanish as the only important language for Americans to learn; ....certainly Spanish is mother language of many Americans, but in other areas French is the primary second language or Portuguese or Mandarin or the language of the Phillipeans or Cambodia or Viet Nam.....advocating Americans become fluent in more than one language makes a lot of sense.....specifying Spanish was probably a political instinct.....and not terrible, but too limited. There are languages that have economic value and others that have cultural value.

He was correct it is silly to spend time worrying about immigrants learning English.....they will do that in a couple of generations if they stay, they will marry and blend and assimulate and worry about the next wave of immigrants...that will happen. His advocating more emphasis on Americans learning foreign languages was correct.

Nobody is saying make Spanish official either, but many are saying that Americans would be advised to adapt, at least for their childrens sake.

I have Japanese neighbors who realize by living in a diverse area of California that their children would be wise to learn Spanish. Actually the children have really taken to it and come over to practice it with us and we reciprocate by learning their culture.

It is a refreshing thing to see how 2 totally different kinds of people can merge by reaching out to each others culture.
I never used the word official. English is the language that is used most by far here and is accepted as the spoken language here. For Obama to say we NEED to speak Spanish or any other language is a lot of CRAP!

Besides: with the growing numbers of illegals self deporting; Spanish is beciming even important here in El Norte.
Spelling/computer problem here:

My second paragraph should have read:

Besides: with the growing numbers of illegals self deporting; Spanish is becoming even less important here in El Norte

There is so much that I don't know that I hope my kids and grandkids learn. The next generation should never be limited to only knowing what there parents learned.

My 7 yo grand daughter is learning French in the first grade.....I think that is wonderful!

Yes it is but what Obama is saying is that Americans SHOULD learn Spanish. This is just plain wrong!

As for Obama not knowing how to speak Spanish, I'm not surprised at all, more of his hypocrisy.

I heard the quote.....what Senator Obama said, was Americans shouldnt waste time worrying about immigrants learning to speak English....because they will....that won't be a problem....BUT in actuality Americans should spend more time making sure their children can speak Spanish (become bi-lingual) because that will be in their best interest.

I took it to mean don't use language as a punishment for new comers but as an oppurtunity for our kids.....worry about your own children who are your responsibility and worry less about what language someother child's parents speak.
He may not have said it the most artfully....but the concept is correct.

I know friends whose grandparents spoke only French and lived worked and died in this country, their children spoke french when they didnt want the children to understand what they were saying; the third generation--my friends-- don't speak French at all and are paying to send their kids to French culture and language classes. Obama is right.....the kids will learn English.

Oh really, then why do I see people on the subway, adults this is, asking for translations when an announcement is made? The cab drivers that hardly understand what you tell them? The clerks in stores that stare at you with blank faces and ask you to speak whatever language they know? There are plenty of adults that can't speak or understand English and expect us to just kowtow to them and learn their language. BS!
