Maybe if more Americans could speak a second language we as a people would be less illiterate and ignorant.

Maybe if the illegal immigrants in this country had learned to speak a second language (namely English), they wouldn't be facing the backlash they are facing now.

Hmm... ?

In one regard:

Us Americans tend to be 'ignorant' in tolerating the presence of illegal immigrants.

And the cold reality is that English is the lingua franca of the world as in aviation, diplomacy, science, etc.

Face it: outside of Spain/Latin America; few people speak Spanish. And Mandarin is not well known outside of China-----most overseas 'Chinese' (English, Germans, Hispanics, French, etc. of Chinese heritage) tend to lose that language by the third generation.

Obama is just being logical since Spanish is spoken in 75% of the Western World.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to learn a language that is already spoken by 33 million people in the US?

But hey you guys are right, go learn Bengali.
