I'm immune to the race card thing, I refuse to entangled in the recursive PC function:

My part of the world is the US. The predominant language here is English.

Who's the odd maker on that? I would love to see it happen, it would actually show USA has some stance on it. Until then...evolution.

Predominant is not official. Call me in 10 years when you see more Mercado's than Strip Malls.

Evolution=Manifest Destiny----------Mexico may cease to exist along with much of its culture/language.

Be very careful what you ask for--------especially if the Zetas overplay their hand and the USA steps in to eliminate 'em. We may wind up with part of Mx by default.

That was from his address to LULAC yesterday - League of United Latin American Citizens. He's getting down on his knees trying to get the Hispanic vote.

Oh yeah because Puerto Ricans really speak English in San Juan and they eat nothing but hot dogs and hamburgers, watch the news and play Bingo.

I ask; would it be easier if they learned English and we learned Spanish? Wouldn't that sort of unite us all and make us all smarter.

This isn't accusing you of racism or anything, but it's just that many people on this board are associating Spanish with some kind of lower class language.
Maybe if more people knew Spanish, there wouldn't be this irrational fear of Mexicans legal or illegal.
Of course, I would like to be able to communicate with Spanish speakers. I would like to be able to communicate with everyone in our country and beyond. The fact that there are (apparently) millions of people living here who cannot speak the language is a problem for another thread.

I did not say that the people who speak Spanish are inferior or less cultured than the French or anyone else (in fact, I am not really sure where "French" enters in - I would certainly NOT advocate that language as the second language anyone ought to learn, either). The language is not "lower class." Indeed, I don't know of any language that I would consider "lower class."

What I said (and remain totally convinced of) is that

1) Obama (who I intend to vote for, for what it's worth) is nakedly pandering on this point, stating that instead of worrying about whether newcomers speak English, we should teach our children to speak Spanish.

2) That if one is honestly looking at the realities, and comparing the relative merits of learning a second language aside from English, I do not see what benefit there is to Spanish over other languages (Arabic, Mandarin, Russian) other than being able to speak to people outside Home Depot who are going to provide day labour.

This does not mean that those people are "inferior." It speaks to the undeniable economic reality that people living in the US who can speak Spanish but not English (presumably the reason Obama and others would have us learn Spanish) are almost exclusively day labourers or similar. They are not hiring managers or admissions officers.

So if one weighs the pros and cons, I would suggest first that the idea that to call Mr Obama's statement pandering does not mean that I do not think people should learn another language - plainly, I and others who respond think that that is to be encouraged. But I would put to Mr Obama that, given the way the world is moving, I would suggest that they learn one of the emerging languages of commerce and diplomatic action.

haha, youre being delusional now. And you really got a hold of that Zetas thing huh? I don't even think people in Mexico talk about them as much as you do. I highly doubt the CIA has a file on the Zetas.
And America will not attempt to have a war with Mexico and much less try to seize Mexican land. Thats ridiculous.
With America's robbing of Mexican land still fresh in so many minds, that would be a very very difficult war to wage.

Why on Earth would the U.S. fight a war that would end up on its soil, with so many large American cities along the border?
That's losing touch with reality.
