An interesting article on MSN today about what would happen if all the illegal immigrants left the U.S. I know the the topic of illegal immigrants has been beaten to death (especially in the Miami forum), but I thought this was an interesting article. It shows both the positive and negative perspectives.

What if we threw out all the illegal immigrants? - MSN Money

Sad that the system depends on breaking the law. This country cannot stomach the thought of deporting the poor refugees anyway, However, if we have a depression that attitude may change. All in all, the net effect of deporting illegals is very positive. The economy would innovate and replace all jobs currently done by illegals, or increase wages.

Moderator cut: personal attack, illegals play a huge role whether you know it or not, without them, other larger "legal" industries could not exist.

There is a huge network of informal businesses that run like clockwork... they are not hurting anyone and actually provide Legal businesses with products and services at a lower costs, which are then passed on to the consumer being YOU..

I don't believe for one minute the US would suffer if they deported all the illegals, the American citizens would step up to the plate and demand a little more money and do all their jobs, plus the US would save money on healthcare, welfare, etc on illegal aliens. Alot of people don't have faith in the American Citizen.

Its not possible to kick out over a dozen million people and its just not going to happen, so why even contemplate.

It is possible, just not easy. First, you have to make conditions such that new illegals don't want to come here. Take away the incentive. Otherwise you are bailing water in a ship that still has large holes in it. Next you have to make conditions here worse for the illegals than they had back in their home country. They will pick up and move once that happens, the same way they moved to come here. We have already seen that in some cases. When one state or city cracks down on their illegal activities they move to another state. WE don't have to deport 20 million illegals. THEY will self-deport... once it is in their best interests which will happen when we make conditions right for them to do so.

Good point--or maybe the U.S. should actually implement severe penalties for getting caught.

Positives: Lower crime rate, less poverty, not having to pay for their medical expenses, re-gaining American culture (ex. Texas losing it's southerness), less threat to national security, less racial tension in parts of California etc.

Negatives: They do a lot of the jobs Americans don't want to do, without them there might food shortages because they contribute a lot by harvesting crops and working in California, can't think of anything else

oh and fyi, America's economy won't collapse if we get rid of illegals, America's economy was fine (if not better) than when it had waves of illegals started flooding it. Also when they don't pay taxes and the U.S goverment has to pay for their medical expenses and their education isn't that hurting the economy?

anyway the postives outweigh the negatives by far

I too have faith in the legal citizens. Florida has a large immigrant population, with some illegals, but it did much better in years past. If the low-paid slave labor is removed, the low paid jobs would simply disappear. We did just fine, if not better before people were subsidized to break the law. Who cuts my grass, cleans my home, built the home, fixes my cars, cooks for me.......Yours Truly! We do not need slave labor as long as we can harness energy to do the work for us. Replace slave labor with automation, and nobody has to suffer. More self service please, who would not prefer U-pick to higher priced supermarkets? I see opportunity in the reduction of illegal workers. Lower population always equals more prosperity and better conditions if the remaining people enjoy more opportunity.
