I don't believe it for a minute. That is hogwash! First of all no one is given the means to an education they work for it and earn it. It is self drive and discipline simply put.

First off there is NO RECESSION and people need to stop saying it! There is a very small and very short slowdown in the general economy because we have to ring excesses out of the real estate market just as we did the dot.com thing awhile back. When speculators get excessive and go nutty, eventually things have to self correct (and BTW oil will be next and when it falls to $60 a barrel, Texas will be crying the blues too).
Secondly we still have a historically low unemployment rate of 5.5% and there are going to be millions of labour intensive jobs to be filled in the future and we are going to need a large immigrant force to help us fill them. Many of these will be "dirty jobs" like construction and landscaping that we Americans do not want to do.

Are you really that clueless, Kev?? These might be jobs that YOU don't want to do, but I know PLENTY of Americans who would do these jobs with PRIDE and CRAFTSMANSHIP.

Put down the Kool-Aid and step away from the pitcher...

I'll have to agree...HELLO...EARTH to KEV...COME IN, KEV !...
I've heard some 'whoppers' on this forum, but the notion that 'Americans don't want construction jobs'? PLEASE.....that's a little TOO much. That's like saying "Asians won't do math"....or "Texans don't like football"....or "Southern Californians always dress for dinner".....PLEASE..let's get real here.

All joking aside, yes Kev, believe it or not, there ARE Americans who WILL do construction jobs..with great pride, enthusiasm, and precision. They like to be paid, though.

This may be true but are the legal citizens willing to move across the country to where the jobs are? While we in the US are a very mobile society there are still great numbers of us that refuse to move away from family and what is considered to be home. Location of job openings and available employable citizens are not always in the same place.

If illegals from Mexico are willing to risk life and limb: why not Americans who need not worry about ICE, etc?

Remember that family counts for even more SOB due in part to the flagrantly crooked authorities---------much like Italy and Spain of another era.

You are correct but what is the reality of US citizens willing to move when we have assistance programs that enable them not to have to move. We really don't have government programs that assist people to move to where the jobs are. The government leaves that up to the employers. Having said that, how many construction companies, fast food restaurants, or other businesses of the like willing to move people across the country. Heck even large corporations really don't want to do it. Don't get me wrong, I am just being realistic.

If the wages are fair instead of being artificially deflated I think you'd be surprised at the number of Americans that would be willing to move hearth and home.

And GuyP is correct.

If paying proper wages means a (slight) drop in the living standards of the putative 'ruling class'---------tough.

What would happen? Well, Phil Gramm thinks we'd just start whining more ... what an idiot.
