Seems like I've been making predictions to this effect for some time now. Did I tell you the REST of how it goes?
(1) People who are SUPPOSED to control things (Government, Border Patrol, ICE, etc) do NOT...(because they either can't..or have been ordered not to)...
(2) The obvious lack of enforcement angers the public...this brings both the 'vigilantes' (Minutemen, etc) 'out of the woodwork'...and when THEY can't do anything either, more sinister types step into the vacuum...(like the OP's story)...
(3) Government then expresses dismay at how 'things have gotten out of control', then offers its solution...tighter surveillance of ALL of us, erosion of personal liberties, etc.
(4) Loss of freedoms for the general public causes even MORE anger, blame, and discontent in the future.
(5) Escalating anger and a sense of worsening lives, causes different groups to begin blaming each other, seeing them as 'the cause of all this'..(There's a simple word for this, but I've quit using it)....
I find no pleasure in these predictions. As the spouse of someone who looks pretty much the textbook 'stereotype' of an illegal immigrant, I have every reason to hope this never comes true. Yet history repeats itself, and those who "Don't Learn from the Past"...etc etc etc.
I'm giving this prediction ONLY as an academic excercise. I've quit using the 'balkanizing' term, since most people apparently don't understand what it means. But it's pretty clear to me.
Is this a SURPRISING story? I don't believe it is. Take a once-vital industrial 'powerhouse' such as Pennsylvania is. Once the 'envy of America' for its enormous industrial output, the place is now full of abandoned industries, defunct rail lines, and tapped-out coal mines. People the place with an extremely diverse population of largely-unemployed blue-collar types, many of them feeling a sense of betrayal. NOW...bring in a NEW group, and set them to work doing some of the few jobs still left....at cut-rate wages. I think the stage has pretty well been set for some anger here...whether it's rational or not.
How "big" is this story? Probably not very. How many people are murdered each week in Pennsylvania? I have no idea. My only interest in this is to point out its predictability, the things that led up to it, and the ominous trends it illustrates for the future....AND, if it continues to escalate, the frightening way in which our government will undoubtedly deal with it....(for "our OWN safety")...
