Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called it a "big mistake" Wednesday to blame illegal immigrants for the state's looming $8 billion budget gap, just as Republican lawmakers have proposed a rollback of benefits for illegal immigrants to save money.

The Republican governor was pitching his long-term budget solution in San Luis Obispo when Diane Blakeslee, mother of GOP Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee, asked Schwarzenegger how the state should handle financial burdens created by illegal immigrants.

"There is, you know, always a time like this where you start pointing the finger at various different elements of what creates the budget mess, and, you know, some may point the finger at illegal immigrants," Schwarzenegger said. "I can guarantee you, I have been now four years in office in Sacramento, I don't think that illegal immigration has created the mess that we are in."

Assembly Republicans this week promoted nearly two dozen bills they said would reduce the "negative impact" that illegal immigrants have on the state budget and border security. The proposals range from requiring individuals to show proof of citizenship when receiving state-funded benefits to repealing a law enabling undocumented students to pay in-state college tuition.
"There's a cost associated with illegal immigration whether we're in a deficit mode or not," said Assemblyman Ted Gaines, R-Roseville. "I think it just becomes more (significant) when we're in a deficit mode and we're having to make tough cuts across the board in education and health and human services. Those should be provided to the citizens of this country and people who came to this country legally."

I would say that he is an idiot if he can't see the damage being done to his state by the illegals.

Agreed. Unfortunately, they are rampant in our government. We need to clean house and throw the majority of them out of office and take back what's left of our country.

I can't say that I disagree with anything you said. I have my doubts that we can get our country back because of all of the PC mess and the open borders crowd that don't seem to care about America.

Sadly, our government is no longer representing the citizens of this country. I agree, we need to clean house. They are so determined to maintain their cheap illegal labor, they have totally disconnected from their constituents. I’ve never witnessed anything this sinister on such a large scale in my entire life.

It was certainly bad enough under Clinton and the first Bush but this illegal lover Bush is the worse that this country ever had and he has shown more times than not that he doesn't care about the country or the citizens who reside here, only Mexicans.

I agree with all that you have said, however, the hammer is falling in cities that I would never have imagined. Somebody at the top has ordered the massive raids and deportations that are being carried out.

Chicago is a sanctuary city and they are thinking of calling in the National Guard because the murder rate is skyrocketing and they want the 2016 Olympics.

That triple murder in California by a previously convicted/deported IA has drawn national attention, and the economy is tanking faster than the speed of sound. If nothing else, our politicians are lazy cowards who love their cushy jobs and they realize that they need to at least look like they are cleaning up the mess America is becoming.

Now you guys are upset that he didn't scapegoat the illegal immigrants?

Not upset but surprised that he can't see that illegals are an impact.
I agree they are not the only cause but they are part of the problem To deny it is foolish.

Politically, the governor is afraid of alienating the very large Latino/Hispanic/ Mexican population in California. After all, he needs all the support he can considering his approval rating has dipped a bit over the prior year and will likely get worse if the state can't deal with the budget issue.
