Now the stoops and haunts once occupied by Hispanics are being filled by about 150 Somali men.
Aydurus Farah, a 21-year-old who immigrated from Somalia in 2004, set out for work in meatpacking plants to make money for his family back home in Somalia.
He planned to begin work at Agriprocessors this week, drawn from Minneapolis to Postville by the promised wages.
"They said over there they pay like 13 dollars an hour, very good money," Farah said as he stood outside Sabor Latino, a popular Mexican restaurant.
He said he also appreciates the city's small-town charms.

Assuming they are here legally, now that's what I call Schadenfreude!
I would suspect that Mr. Farah is a legal immigrant for two reasons. The first being, it would be hard as hell to sneak in from Somalia. The second and more pressing reason being he is being paid $13 an hour --- which is a lot more then the $5 an hour the illegals were making. I imagine now that agriprocessers are hiring legal immigrants and citizens they will also get and keep their plant up to code and osha requirements.

I think Somalians get political asylum. They are mostly centered around The Twin Cities, and they also have a ,large community in San Diego, where an apartment building I used to live in seemed like it was 60 percent Somalian.
If we need immigrants (legal of course), we do not need them all from one country or region, we should have a balanced mix of immigrants.
There should be no preference given to those of just one country when so many people throughout the world wish to come here. Another good reason to have a healthy mix is that it encourages the desire for a common language, just as it did in the past.
Nothing more beautiful than to see a group of immigrants from various parts of the world discuss an American foot ball game in English.
Better a group of Black African Somalis who happen to be Muslim that came here legally vs. a bunch of White/Mestizo Christian Hispanics who came here illegally.

Some immigrants come from countries that are suffering from a humanitarian catastrophe. Roughly 45% of the Somali population has been forced to flee from Somalia and the United States was one of the countries that volunteered to take them in since countries in the region such as Kenya could not cope with the economic strain in handling the situation. Today after 18 years of civil war, Somalia is suffering from the worst Humanitarian crisis anywhere in the world. I don’t think an immigrant from say India or China should be given the same chance as the Somalis and the Sudanese who came from a hellish background. What justice would it be if a child from Darfur or Mogadishu was given the same priority as some-one from India or China? America has done such a noble deed for helping these helpless people and we should take a minute and appreciate the gracious step taken by our government when most Western countries are turning the other way.
