Federal authorities have launched a pilot program aimed at encouraging illegal immigrants to leave the country voluntarily by allowing them to remain free of government custody while they coordinate their own departure.
This program looks "iffy" at best. The only way that this program could work would be for ICE to have GPS tracking devices on the deportees, otherwise they would become "lost" in the illegal community and be out of ICE control. The story doesn't mention anything about GPS tracking devices. I just don't see this program working, too many escape hatches.

This idea is like expecting bank robbers who have done their robberies over 5-10 years ago and haven't been caught yet to automatically turn themselves in.

Little incentive, no way to track them. Useless idea.

Since this is a national election year, you can expect more of these "useless" ideas from the Federal bureaucracy! They play well on the news channels, but have about as much substance as an empty tin can!

Look at it from the positive side, Steve, if ONE illegal from each state voluntarily deports . . . we're ahead of the game.

I feel the same way. In light of the fact that they are fully aware that Mexico doesn't want them either, they have nothing to lose by staying here illegally. Even our jails are better than a life of starvation and sleeping outdoors in the makeshift shanty's that they left behind.
