It is outrageous. He said your kids NEED to learn SPANISH.
He is telling everyone that kids need to learn one specific language that is not English. That is what is wrong with what he said. Many people take that as a threat.
However, if he had made a statement to the effect that while English is the language of our nation- I think it would be good for people to learn another language-any one-not specifically Spanish-I think his words would have been received much better.
The key words here are "need" and "Spanish".
Nah, this is no big deal. Did he tell people to ONLY learn spanish, & no english? Nope.....open your minds to learning different languages.
I have no problem with people learning to speak aditional languages. I would hope though, that they would learn an additional language because they WANT to not because they NEED to.

So in your world, the only two languages to learn are English and Spanish? I think you're missing the point - he didn't say to learn "different" languages, he specifically said to learn Spanish. I too call foul on that.
Although his best friend of 9 years is American of mexican descent, my son chose French as his second language his freshman year in high school. He is now a college student and while he has mastered the language he continues to take classes related to the language and culture of France.
His best friends' parents and all 5 children (who we love dearly and we all consider each other as family) only speak spanish occasionally and only within the confines of their home.

Pssst, good for you, give yourself a pat on the back. Now, maybe you want to think this through & learn spanish. After all, there is quite a huge population that speaks that language, maybe you'll get some use out of it?

Why should she/he? After all, I thought our Spanish speaking (il)legal immigrants wanted to learn English and in fact do learn English??!
The population you speak of are illegals. Hispanic Americans speak english or are bilingual.
