Fifty-three years ago, when newly elected Dwight Eisenhower moved into the White House, America's southern frontier was as porous as a spaghetti sieve. As many as 3 million illegal migrants had walked and waded northward over a period of several years for jobs in California, Arizona, Texas, and points beyond.
President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents - less than one-tenth of today's force. The operation is still highly praised among veterans of the Border Patrol.
Quote:
Bill Chambers, who worked for a combined 33 years for the Border Patrol and the then-called US Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), says politically powerful people are still fueling the flow of illegals.
During the 1950s, however, this "Good Old Boy" system changed under Eisenhower - if only for about 10 years.
In 1954, Ike appointed retired Gen. Joseph "Jumpin' Joe" Swing, a former West Point classmate and veteran of the 101st Airborne, as the new INS commissioner.
Influential politicians, including Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson (D) of Texas and Sen. Pat McCarran (D) of Nevada, favored open borders, and were dead set against strong border enforcement, Brownell said. But General Swing's close connections to the president shielded him - and the Border Patrol - from meddling by powerful political and corporate interests
Just more proof our Government and big business is at fault for fueling illegal immigration and not enforcing the law.
The National Guard should be put on the borders til we can erect a wall that keeps the miscreants OUT.
And I will go one step further. Every Mexican who slips over the border and gets apprehended should be put to work at minimum wage, building the very wall that will then keep them out once they are deported.

Did you read the post? It was/is a much larger problem than just putting National Guard on the border, you had politicians and businessmen lobbying against enforcement even back then:
Quote:
"The rise in illegal border-crossing by Mexican '*******s' to a current rate of more than 1,000,000 cases a year has been accompanied by a curious relaxation in ethical standards extending all the way from the farmer-exploiters of this contraband labor to the highest levels of the Federal Government."
Who fuels who? If there were no work, illegals wouldn't be here, if there were no government handouts illegals would not be here, you need to fix those problems or the National Guard will have no effect at all. Constantly whining about Mexicans is not going to fix these issues with corruption in the US Government and Businesses.

Well, mate, people will say that it is the illegals fault because they are the ones breaking the law to enter this country. Thing is, there has always been some illegal immigration to this nation. What do they think the insult WOP meant? WithOutPapers. And plenty of my own countrymen were here illegally - looking for work - until the economy got better at home!
Humans will do what they need to survive - and if they can survive and earn more here in US, they will come here. So, to stop it, you must cut off the snake's head - heavily fine the corporations that hire them. Also pressure the corrupt Mexican government to treat its own citizens better. Mexico has many resources and wealth, but it is hoarded by a small portion of the population while the majority live in poverty.
I am a proponent of not only fining employers who hire illegals, I think they should be shut down.
My suggestion about the National Guard was simply one facet of addressing the problem. And putting illegals to work on building a wall is just a way of getting it built - and giving the Mexicans a job that really matters once they get caught.
