This certainly doesn't sound like "Gestapo" tactics to me.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Immigration and Customs Enforcement
officials are urging illegal immigrants to flee the Gulf Coast
before Hurricane Gustav's arrival, telling them not to be worried
about checkpoints.

Agency spokesman Brandon Montgomery says there are no
immigration enforcement operations, and no immigration enforcement
checkpoints associated with evacuations.

He says the Department of Homeland Security's top priorities in
any emergency "are lifesaving and life-sustaining activities."

About two dozen Hispanic men gathered under oak trees near Claiborne Avenue, where on better days they would be waiting for work rebuilding from Katrina. They were wary of boarding any bus, even though a city spokesman said no identity papers would be required.

"The problem is," said Pictor Soto, 44, of Peru, "there will be immigration people there and we're all undocumented."

What a perfect way to head North unhindered. The Mexican govt told many migrants it would be best to sneak across during the wild fires and many got bbq'd on that advice.

How true. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mexico has given similar instructions during the hurricane. There's no telling how many will die as a result.

Perhaps a bus to return them to Mexico or their country or origin would be in order. No penalty, no processing, just free transportation to the safety of home.

Seems like a simple compromise between compassion and enforcement.
