Some legal immigrants stayed quarantined on Eliis Island for a long time and some died there. There were no ethnocentric interest groups, no handouts and freebies etc. That was the LEGAL way to do it. Guess what? There is still a LEGAL way to do it where-again you are screened for disease-not given a "glance".

And I notice that you called everyone "immigrants". Sorry there is a difference between the legal immigrants of yesterday and today and an illegal alien. Illegal aliens are not "immigrants".
people freely immigrated into the US until the 1920s when quotas and caps were set in place. prior to that we did have the chinese exclusion act in the late 1800's but otherwise people form all over europe were free to come as they pleased. if they could afford it. ellis island was an entry point where immigrants were looked over, asked 20 questions and then left to go on into the folds of the american dream. the people that got stuck on ellis, were few, compared to the flood of immigrants who breezed past. about 2% of those who arrived were rejected. great immigration standards. imagine if we only rejected 2% of people now? and only asked 20 questions.

but the screening process of then and now are very different and the systems to track people are also very different, thus these two types ar incomparable. what has not changed is the views towards immigrants. and illegal immigrant was not as pronounced a concept as it is now, because back then all you had to do was show up and hope to not be the 2% rejected. everyone was granted legal status. a definite shift occured in the 20's and immigration policy continues to evovle.
what never changed was the dislike of these immigrants. the disdain for a foreign culture.
the irish felt it. the chinese felt it. the italians felt it. now the hispanics feel it.
this is history. look it up.

I don't need to look anything up. You made a statement about "immigration from the past" and I responded to that-with correct information.

I really don't care if there was a period of time in this country's history where people "came freely". This is 2008 and for many years there has been a right way and a wrong way to come here. Millions have come here legally-illegal aliens have no excuse or legitimate justification for their actions. You are either here legally or illegally. It really is that simple.

You also try to lump legal immigrants and illegal aliens together which is not only wrong but makes me question potential ulterior motives when someone does that.

You either do or do not understand that we have an Illegal Immigrant problem. Making them legal won't change the fact that we have a problem that is now huge.

The problem is the importation of poverty. We are not importing Doctors and Engineers. We are importing peasants that have nothing but open mouths and hands.

You really can’t compare the immigration process of the past with our current laws. Times have changed, and our needs have changed. We no longer need multitudes of people to ‘build’ our country. Moreover, the past is irrelevant. All laws change with time, not just immigration laws. Law-abiding citizens conform.

We are not importing Doctors and Engineers.

so your problem is not so much that there illegal or legal, you just dont like them, so basically according to you, their is no way of us ever having a chance to come to this country to better our situations.

thats exactly what im saying. these two periods are incomparable. but people still want to say that back then they did everything by the book, when there wasnt even a book written.

what im also saying is that immigrants, illegal or otherwise have always met resistance i ntheir new country. so all this garbage spewed by some posters is nothing new. its all recycled.

But, it is new. The opposition today is not directed at legal immigrants, or even a million illegal aliens. The growing opposition is to MASSIVE illegal immigration -- people who have NO legal right to be here -- people who are not entitled to the same rights and privileges as legal citizens. We have never in the history of this country had 20-30 million people residing in this country in violation of our immigration laws. You must understand this IS a new phenomenon.

It is still an apples to oranges comparison. Let's say you're having a dinner party and invited 50 guests. Would you feel obligated to provide food for 10 interlopers who happened to be in the neighborhood, heard music, saw lots of cars, so decided to join the festivities? That’s precisely what the citizens of this country are expected to do. We’re not only expected to welcome the 10 strangers into our house, but to arrange for the caterer to provide 10 additional meals and everything that entails.

You forgot to mention that they would be demanding their own songs from the dj and pushing you out of the house and into the garage to make room for their next 200 of kin.
