Homeland Security: Its 530,000 illegal immigrants ranks Az 6th in U.S.
Homeland Security: Its 530,000 illegal immigrants ranks Az 6th in U.S.

More than half a million illegal immigrants lived in Arizona in January 2007, a recent study by the federal government estimates.
The state's illegal immigrant population reached 530,000 last year, a 62 percent increase from 330,000 in 2000, according to the report released Friday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The report estimates 11.8 million illegal and unauthorized immigrants lived in the United States in 2007, 3.3 million more than early 2000.
Homeland Security defines "unauthorized" immigrants as foreign-born people who entered the country without inspection, or were admitted temporarily and stayed past the allowed date.
Arizona ranked sixth nationally for its number of illegal immigrants, who make up 5 percent of the country's total.
California remained the leading state of residence for the illegal population with 2.8 million, followed by Texas, Florida, New York and Illinois.
Although Mexico continues to dominate as the largest source of illegal population growth, immigrants from Brazil, India, Guatemala and Honduras account for the greatest percentage increases during the past seven years, according to the report.
In order to estimate the number of illegal immigrants, the DHS Office of Immigration Statistics subtracted the number of legal resident immigrants from the total foreign-born population living in the U.S. on January 2007. The remainder population was considered unauthorized immigrants, the report said.
The agency provided data of estimated legal residents, and the American Community Survey of the U.S. Census Bureau was the source for estimated total foreign-born population.
The results did not include any foreign-born residents who entered the U.S. before 1980. The report said it was assumed most were eligible for legal permanent resident status.
The Cuban-born population living in the U.S. also was excluded from the estimates. According to immigration law, Cubans living in the U.S. more than a year are eligible o become legal residents.
The report listed a number of limitations and errors regarding accuracy, particularly the validity and reliability of census survey data and of arrival and departure records.

Personally, I think the estimate is rather low. That being said, since they know where the majority of illegals reside what are they waiting for?

Can you imagine how many more AZ would have if not for Joe Arpaio's heroic efforts?

Exactly. Chicago has been a sanctuary city since Harold Washington was the Mayor and that was back in the 80's. Not only does Chicago have illegal alien hispanics, but there are illegal alien: Polish, Irish, Asians, Lithuanians and more than a few from Viet Nam.
