In all fairness: the birthrate is under 2.40 children per woman-----------down from 7.3 back in 1962.

In California, the Hispanic birth rates are continuing to rise. Every time I go out shopping, etc., I see at least 4 pregnant Hispanics with 3 or 4 little ones hanging on. That is no exaggeration, either. For the most part, they are Catholic and do not use birth control. I'll post the recent article stating that Santa Clara County's AIDS cases have gone up 67% in the past five years in the Hispanic population living in that county.

immigration legal or otherwise makes up most population growth. we stopped having kids --like france. 25% americans married no kids, 25% single live alone, 30% married with kids rest "other". btw one of the biblical predictions is that foreigners will take over your land.

Hispanics favor children over material things. They are willing to live on less and have bigger families. I think 2 or 3 kids are plenty. We need to consider the strains on the environment and slow overpopulation.

And the irony is that Hispanic Spain's birthrate is ca. 1.3 children per woman. Replacement level is 2.1 kids.

The problem is 1) A very high cost of living for American citizens -- housing, food, medical care, day care, taxes here make having large families very difficult. The illegals don't pay for their prenatal care, or hospital stays and they look forward to food stamps, WIC, free college and so can pop out a baby every 9-10 months.

2) The population of the USA isn't shrinking, we're doubling every few decades, the population is already well over 300,000,000 and rising fast.

Is this how all our large cities must become?

There's another problem - that's in Mexico where people actually must work for a living and work to support the children they bear. That's not the case with these people in the USA where they are given more food stamps, more housing allowance, more WIC whenever they produce another baby.

There's another factor in the equation. American women tend to wait to have their 2 point something children. Very often women wait until after high school, after college, after they've started a career and married before having their one or two children. Meanwhile the Mexican girl had 2 or 3 kids before she would have finished high school, and is already a proud grandmother by the time her American counterpart is getting around to having her first child.

You have to consider the generational speed of reproduction also. Over half of Mexican girls in the USA have babies, and often 3 or 4 by the time they reach age 20, most out of wedlock of course. Here on the border they have day care centers on many high school campuses as a way to try to keep these young mothers in school and they pay them to attend.

Not disputing your thoughts here; but, more and more...........and this was prior to the tremendous crack down on illegals here in Arizona--------1-2 kids kids was fast becoming the norm for Latino couples here.

I remember back in the 60's when "The Pill" became a national issue. They even had songs written about.

I don't actually believe in the pill or limiting families to 1 or 2 children max.

I don't believe that people should have kids they don't want to have, and I believe people shouldn't have kids if they aren't going to provide for them -- which means the welfare class shouldn't have many kids.

After that, I think it works out for people to have whatever number of kids they want and that they can support.

So many women don't want any, that if some family has the means and wants 6 or 7 or 8 or more kids -- it evens out. It's better to have a stable population than one exploding with children of very impoverished families and mostly unwed uneducated women.
