Blake Best is 23 years old, African-American and speaks Spanish well enough to function easily in Mexico.
That last fact is why Best says he supports a measure that would force all Metro Nashville business to be done in English. If he can learn Spanish, newcomers can learn English.
But some who hope to influence the outcome of a Jan. 22 special election — where voters will decide whether to approve a ban on government business being conducted, in most cases, in languages other than English — suspect Best's race could have a role in the way he votes, too.
While conventional wisdom suggests that one group with a history of poor treatment might be sympathetic to the struggles of another, there are hints of significant African-American support for the English-only proposal, which almost exclusively will affect immigrants.
And in a county where black voters make up at least 29 percent of the electorate, those who want to defeat the measure are discussing a strategy they say must be broad and meaningful enough to attract white and African-American voters.
Agreed. The corporate asshats forcing us to press 2 for English BS bares a huge responsibility for the arrogant demands of the spanish speaking asshats in this country illegally.
It's way past time to declare a moratorium on ALL immigration until we can figure out who the hell is here illegally and get rid of them. Those with anchors should be deported and forced to take their anchors with them unless they have a family member or someone else who is willing to PAY ALL OF THEIR EXPENSES and provide care without ANY assistance from our tax dollars until that minor reaches the age of 18. The 14th Amendment should be abolished, back dated effective 1986. Any children born to 2 illegal aliens parents should be declared a citizen of the parents' country of origin. Chain migration should be abolished effective immediately.
Legal immigration should not resume until our needs are reassessed, and unless Americans are given preferential treatment to fill whatever jobs become available.

As a black male, who works in a bank with a lot of customers with no english skills, i'll vote for ANYTHING relating to English only.
How do you stand it? I have gotten so sick of the rudeness and arrogance of those who think that it is their right to reside here illegally and continue to live and speak that shrill dialect as if they are still SOB.
IMHO, it's simply a confirmation of their utter arrogance, sense of entitlement and total disrespect for our country.

Yes indeedy, as the economy weakens, tolerance for all things illegal alien is running out. Slowly and methodically, the tide is turning.
I wonder why bring race into it? I am not naive enough to think that the black experience is the same as the white experience -- either historically or culturally. But at the end of the day, we are all American citizens and the fact that we all want a unified country with a common language should not come as a surprise to anyone. Well, except for illegal apologists who thought they would ride the civil rights coattails to citizenship.

Agreed. But I think the point in bringing up the race of the author of this platform is to derail the lies of the ethnocentric special interests who consistently imply that only white Americans are against amnesty simply because they are racist.
When they do so, it implies that the majority of legal hispanics and blacks don't care about or are in agreement with illegal immigration and not opposed to amnesty. As for their delusional attempt at making illegal iimmigration a civil rights movement, they can thank the idiot behind Elvira Arrellano's declaration of being "the new Rosa Parks" for turning the tide of black Americans against their delusionally insane asses.
JDubMom is simply 'fighting fire with fire'; shall we say
It is extremely risky for a bunch of illegals and their enablers to use the 'race card' against American Blacks------especially when in many other countries most of said illegals would also be counted as White.

Ah, thanks for explaining it to me! It does make sense....
