I think it would be interesting to watch the goings on in the Human Resources Department of huge factories where illegal aliens were pushed out due to workplace raids or new laws regarding use of E-Verify.

I was reading that the Jewish Meat Packing Plant in Iowa that was raided and forced to fire most of its staff because they were illegal aliens, has had a devil of a time replacing its workforce even in today's tough job market. They have tried hiring LEGAL Immigrants from Africa and the South Pacific but they would quit or were fired after a couple of weeks. They tried to hire welfare to work people who also did not work out.

Is it possible that in certain types of work, employers do not have enough willing workers without the illegals in today's society?

The local meat packing plants in my area are doing just fine without illegals. Sounds to me like that plant that got busted is simply making excuses to justify their very questionable hiring practices. Perhaps they were not fined enough to make them feel repentant of their crimes?

No, there are plenty of people willing to work these jobs. Who do you think filled these positions prior to illegal aliens? However, they will have to be willing to pay a livable wage if they expect to hire legal citizens.

These unscrupulous employers have become so accustomed to their ill-gotten profits from employing 'slave' labor and not paying required employment-related taxes, insurance, and benefits; they simply don't want to change. They will have to re-enter the legal world of employment.

This is nothing but lame propaganda to support their illegal hiring practices. They will do anything, and say anything, to continue using exploitable illegal aliens. If they can’t afford to pay decent wages and comply with the employment and immigration laws of this country, they don’t deserve to be in business.

I think that place in Iowa is a special case - sounds monstrous.

I'd like to see the results of the Arizona (and I think Missouri?) employer fines - how that's working out, if the companies are paying more for fewer employees or what.

I read somewhere that ethics and economics are not so much enemies as strangers. That economics, because it has no moral foundation, justifies immoral things as leading to a greater good (employment, products, keep the economy moving).

Remember Upton Sinclair's The Jungle - those workers were immigrants who took the most horrific jobs. I dont remember U.S. talking about the wages but Im sure he did.

Your question - in other words, would some businesses go out of business if they had to, say, double their labor costs? As a blanket superficial answer I'd say it's up to them. Maybe they would have to shrink or adjust somewhere else.

I dont know the statistics, but I know illegal immigrants (= illegally low-wage workers) are not hired only for unpleasant jobs. That "work Americans won't do" is a smokescreen for the most part.

I doubt that legal labor is double in cost. Perhaps 25% higher and in which case the greedy employer pockets the profit. So no I don't think they would go out of business. They would either raise the cost of their product or streamline some where else.

We have been overwhelmed with massive amounts of illegal aliens, allegedly doing the jobs that Americans won't do. It has been repeated time and again by various sources that this country desperately needs massive amounts of illegals to sustain our economy.

Despite more than a decade of cheap labor, 90% of American businesses are either laying off in record numbers, are on the verge of collapse or have already collapsed and died. None of this just began happening yesterday. While the population of illegal aliens in this country has grown in record numbers, there has been a steady decline in employment rates for more than 3 years. I have a theory as to what has really transpired and excelerated this collapse, but I'd love to hear from an illegal alien or one of their supporters the reasons they think our economy has collapsed, in spite of the alleged "contributions" of millions of illegal aliens allegedly "doing the jobs Americans won't do."

Most or some of these meat packing plants were/are owned and ran by non-Americans--non-Citizens.
Illegal employees were treated like Sh*t. No doubt that once their work force was change to Legal workers, the owner/employers attitude toward the employers didn't change.

I also wouldn't doubt that the employers who were upset about being forced to change, are purposely taking this out or holding this against the Legal workers.

AS mentioned, I'm sure that this problem finding willing Americans to work is BS.

I'm seeing it first hand. The band of Illegals at the parking lots is thinning out as more Americans are getting the axe at work and forced to be in the same market.

That's entirely not true. What really happened was the meat packing plant is feeling the end-brunt of the recession and actually stopped PAYING the new LEGAL employees. The employees have stopped working and are demanding their pay. The employer is not a victim of lost workers, it is a victim of the recession (not many people buying their goods) and the inability to pay its workers... like most companies...
