Don't know about Arapaio close-up, only by reputation. Seems 'hard-boiled', but I fail to see anything he's doing that's nearly as controversial as one-time LAPD Chief Darrel Gates. Gates, when asked to comment on the deaths of several black suspects after the 'chokehold' was used to subdue them, said he didn't understand why these particular blacks had died, since the chokehold usually didn't harm "normal people".
Gates was ALSO in the spotlight when he went to the home of Damian Williams (the guy who, during the 'Rodney King' riots, was videotaped pulling white trucker Reginald Denny out of his Big Rig and stomping him nearly to death on the ground). Gates, in his 'street uniform' and his short, 'regulation' haircut, PERSONALLY cuffed Williams, escorting him down the walk, across the lawn, opened the police cruiser and put him inside...(probably the first arrest he'd PERSONALLY made in years)...all shown on the evening news.
Still, when Gates retired, someone convinced him to host a radio call-in show, on LA's KFI. His 'hard-edged' gravel-voiced opinions apparently intrigued the listeners, as he answered most callers with "in MY judgement...." etc. Even the commercials played up the image..."If you don't tune in to the 'The Chief', each weekday afternoon from 4 to 6 on KFI, he'll PERSONALLY come out to your house and RUN YOU IN"
His image faded, and as I recall, the show only lasted about a year. Once the 'novelty' wore off, I suppose he just wasn't cut out to host a radio show.
