Forgive me. Bad habit of mine, using hypothetical situations. Comparing the US with anywhere else is never a 'good' thing to do. We're the 'worst, meanest, and most xenophobic' northern neighbor Mexico ever had.....and that's simply "that"...no comparisons needed.

There are many differences, but there's still no neon sign up in the sky proclaiming what the One True Language ought to be. There's free market competition between languages, and a natural economic reward for knowing the right ones.

This is why I've studied English so hard after coming to America from Russia, this is why I've dabbled in several Germanic languages back in my left-wing Hail Europe days (stupid! stupid! stupid!), and that's why I occasionally dabble in Cantonese (Hong Kong) and Mandarin (Singapore) today.

If more people were on board with something like Esperanto, I'd be on board too, but good ideas don't always take root...
