Whoever wrote this wire service report on Chertoff's speech left out quite a bit when they said. 'Chertoff warned states'....
And it's completely false to say he 'warned business'.
As far as 'business' goes, he did the opposite and coddled business in his speech.
What he actually said, is Homeland Security doesn't require that states and localities help them enforce the law.
Reason he says that is he can't force states to do the fed's job for them.
Little problem of States Rights, eh? Little matter of legal jurisdiction.
Maybe the feds should do their own job, after all, ....they got paid billions of dollars to do that, eh?
What Chertoff 'warned' about was, and this is what he really did say, states and localities shouldn't stand in the way of Homeland Security while Homeland Security was trying to do their job.
He didn't give any examples of anyone actually having done that, it just sounded like tough talk.
But make no mistake....
No mention of any business standing in their way, and no 'warning' to business in what he did say.
In fact, in the same speech, Chertoff made it clear that business would continue to enjoy the same treatment from the Bush administration that they are used to, ...that of being excepted from any law which might actually cause them to be restricted from exploiting the immigration laws to acquire the cheapest labor possible.
He says in his speech that he tried to implement regulations to match records on hiring and the corporations told him they objected because they wouldn't want the law enforced because it would deprive them of illegal workers.
Chertoff says, he feels for the corporations and assures them there's a 'right way' to word the regulations so 'labor' won't be impacted.
..
So there you have it, Chertoff, instead of (what was that arizona bear said?) 'supplying the arsenal' in your 'war', Chertoff instead is publicly stating he's not doing anything of the sort.
Chertoff is doing just what he's been told to do, keep the corporations happy by not writing or enforcing any regulations that the corporations don't like.
