Under Internal Revenue Service regulations, a person cannot have both the Social Security and Individual Taxpayer number, the district attorney said.
Sheriff's deputies launched their investigation in August after an investigator started probing one case of identity theft, according to the district attorney. Deputies learned that the suspect involved had been filing taxes through Amalia's Translation and Tax Service after admitting to the agency's tax preparer, Amalia Cerrilo, that he was using a bogus name and Social Security number to get jobs.
"This investigation has revealed so many issues on so many levels," Ken Buck, Weld County district attorney, said in a statement. "The most disturbing of which is the vast number of American citizens who have had their identity stolen. As an office, we file approximately 2,500 criminal cases a year. From one tax preparer in one town, we have increased that amount by more than 50 percent."
